I have a note spacing question here. I have a completed piece for solo piano, where the systems and page layout are exactly what I want, but after a few recent editorial adjustments, there’s one system where noteheads get crowded together. When I look at the windows in Engrave Mode to the right of the systems, the one in question is just over 106%. It would not work for me to have measures moved to previous or next systems.
What is the best way to permit a little space around those noteheads? Readjust the note spacing for for the one or two offending measures in that system; manually tweak individual notes left or right; change the rastral size for that one system?
You could try to add a notespacing change for that system, and another one to reset at the next system.

And how to do that? One of the advantages of Dorico, as opposed to Finale, is that is pretty much automatic. You don’t have to confront that issue very often.
I’ve tried this from a fixed position in the score, changed the “minimum value for short notes”, value changes in the window are indicated, clicked ok, and nothing happens, except that a “Note Spacing Change” appears as a signpost in the score.
Then we’ll need to see the actual document, to see what’s going on.
Try changing the default value for crotchet as in my picture.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I’m adjust the appearance of 16th-notes. Why wouldn’t I change “Minimum space for short notes”. Adjusting quarter-notes did nothing.
Did you press OK in between for the score to update? It won’t update automatically when you change the value.
Jesper
Yes, I believe so, because the signpost appeared.
That didn’t work, even after several attempts. Is it possible that there’s just not enough space in the system to get what I want, and no change in “Note spacing changes” will permit that?
Could you post the file? You can pm me if you prefer. Click my avatar, then message. Did you put the notespacing change at the beginning of the system?
Jesper
I’ve found the solution, and the look is good: clicked at the beginning of the system (nowhere does it say to do this!); reduced the custom spacing ratio; clicked ok; when to the beginning of the next system and reset the same window to the default. Easy enough.

Ah, you’re right. I missed that. As for posting the file, it’s huge, and I never feel good about circulating unfinished works. I know it would be easier to pinpoint the problem, but in my case it will have to be details or verbal descriptions. In any event, many thanks for the time and the help, Jesper.
You can place note spacing changes anywhere. They do not need to be at the start of a system.
No, but if you put it at the last note of the system, it can’t really change anything in that system.
Jesper
While I’m at it, if ever I decided that reducing the rastral size of only one system was a better solution, in order to allow for more horizontal space, is that possible?
