Missing fonts from Japanese scores

Hello all,

I’m a USA-based composer who recently worked with copyists in Japan on a project. The Japanese orchestrators used Dorico, Sibelius, and Finale, all of which I have licenses for and all of which open. However, the Finale-based orchestrators incorporated into the scores a number of fonts that, while common in Japan, are hard to track down in the US. I am writing to see if anyone can help me find these fonts so I can open the Finale files smoothly. I’ve tried a few approaches but nothing is working; these are full orchestra scores, and the parts also lack the same fonts.

The most important missing fonts are: Chaconne, Kousaku, Kousaku Percussion, and Rentaro.

Additional missing fonts include four Japanese Language fonts, along with: Times, Times LT Std Bold, Times LT Std Italic, Times LT Std Roman, Century Old Style Std, Century Old Style Std Bold, Century Old Style Std Italic

Thank you for any suggestions.
Kind regards,

John

These used to be included with some versions of Finale: I think v25 had them bundled as an application resource, so that they were available for creating ePub books, but they weren’t installed in the font folder.

They were also included if you downloaded the Japanese demo version of Finale.

I suspect you’ll have to ask your colleagues. It doesn’t seem like these were available outside of Finale.
I think the Japanese version of 27 came with Kousaku in a SMuFL version; there’s also a “Chaconne EX” SMuFL version for sale, though it is quite pricey.

There are some subtle differences between Times and Times New Roman. Times was the version made by Linotype, so Times LT should be identical - just renamed for the OpenType version.

Times is included on macOS, but treated as a “legacy” font, so you can’t always create a new document using that font, though existing documents that do use it will work correctly.

You can buy Linotype’s Times on myfonts.com here.
It’s now named “Times Pro”, and has a larger character set, but it is the same typeface.

Century Old Style Std can be bought from myfonts.com here.

Century OS is also available on Adobe Fonts.

Thank you very much! I will follow up on your suggestions. I do like the look of Chaconne – very elegant – but so far have not found a working version that Finale can “see” properly. However, it’s still helpful to have all this information. I’ve been searching around and, although some of these fonts are available through Adobe or, as you suggested, myfontsdot-com. I’ll buy the “Chaconne EX” SMuFL font, despite its price, but unfortunately there’s no guarantee that it is going to work with Finale, so I will probably just use Maestro if it fails.

Thanks again for your very helpful reply.

Kind regards,

John
