Missing Samples in HALion Sonic with Dorico Pro 6

Hello!

I am having trouble with “missing files” in HALion Sonic. I have been looking (through Google) at a number of Steinberg Forum posts and YouTube videos on similar topics with some success, but not enough.

I am using Dorico 6.2.30 along with Cantai 3.1.0 on two Windows 10 machines where I work. I also own my own licenses and copies of Dorico and Cantai which I run currently on a Lenovo IdeaPad Windows 11 laptop computer. The two work computers are in a managed environment where I have to have someone from the IT department do the installs because I have limited permissions.

I have a project file, developed on my Windows 11 computer, that includes a piano track (empty), a high-hat track (4 clicks to the bar for recording purposes), and four vocal tracks assigned to Cantai choir-type voices (each is set for 6 voices). The purpose of the project is to make part recordings for choir members. (I have similar problems with other project files, but this is my testbed for checking out solutions because it consistently produces the problem.)

The file prints and plays fine on my Windows 11 computer and one of the work computers. On the second work computer I get messages/dialogs about missing files.

I get a dialog titled “HALion Sonic - Find Missing Samples” with these two “Missing Files”:
Missing sound archive (double click to register), e.g. Etude_AttackNoise_RR1.tg3c
Missing sound archive (double click to register), e.g. 15a_DrHip086_BsDr05_Soft.wav

At the bottom of the dialog it says 1735 missing files. If I press “Start Search” it highlights the first missing file line (Etude_AttackNoise_RR1.tg3c). If I double click on a missing file line (like Etude_AttackNoise_RR1.tg3c), it opens a File Explorer dialog titled “Register HSB/VST Sound Files” showing the files in C:\ProgramData\Steinberg\Content\HALion\VST Sound. If I select one or all and press open I get a dialog asking “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?” (Steinberg Library Manager.exe) and asking for a user name and password. I don’t have permission.

(Just for comparison, another project file with HALion Sonic sounds Electric Bass VX, Sustain Ah, and Concert Grand Elements show 2217 missing files and three missing file lines)

If I play the song, the Cantai voices work fine but the hi-hat doesn’t sound.

If an IT person runs it under his profile on this same work computer there are no problems with missing files and the hi-hat sounds.

We have reinstalled Dorico (through the Download Manager) and Downloaded all the sound libraries again (through the Download Manager).

Initially I was receiving the messages that included “!! HALion Sonic !!”. I deleted the folder C:\Users\profilename\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Dorico 6 AudioEngine_64. That took care of the “!!..!!” messages. The IT person gave all users “Read & execute” permission on the folder C:\ProgramData\Steinberg and all subfolders.

Still have the problem on that computer.

The problem computer is older (slower) and may have been set up with different permissions from the computer on which the sounds work. But again, it works for the IT person who has all permissions.

I’m not dead in the water because I can input charts on the computer in question and I can play Cantai voices. I can make recordings with other sounds on the second work computer. At some point we will replace the problem computer with a new one and I imagine things will be fine. But I’d like to be able to track down the problem so I can function fully on either computer and so we know what to do if it recurs on another computer.

What else can we try?

Thanks for your help.

Geoffrey

Hi Geoffrey, though you said that IT gave access rights to ProgramData/Steinberg for everyone, I have the strong suspicion that you still have an access right issue there. All contents files seem to be installed correctly, because when your IT person is logged in, there is no problem.

In order to check, please follow the instructions I gave in this thread.

Thanks

Vielen Dank, Ulf!

I don’t normally have to deal with permissions, so this was beyond me. I followed the thread and from there another thread that got me to the “icacls” command. My IT guy ran the command as an administrator under my profile, and now Dorico/HALion finds the sound files. Problems are always an opportunity to learn something.

Gottes segen!

Geoffrey

You are welcome, Geoffrey.

The icacls command would have been the next thing that I would have suggested, but you already found that. I’m glad to hear that you are now up and running everything.

Best, Ulf
