I’ve been working on a song and exported it so that I have the file to easily listen to on my pc and on my phone, but the exported file version is significantly quieter than when listening in the project window. This is the same across the pc I am using to make the song, different devices connected to the pc and my interface, and on my phone. I’ve tried looking for answers but I can’t find anything useful. Any ideas? Thanks
maybe this topic will help you:
Hi,
This topic has been discused here on the forum many times already. Please search for it.
Ensure, you don’t use any compressor or limiter on the Control Room Monitor bus (if you are using Control Room).
How do you compare? What kind of player do you use? How does it sound, if you import the exported file back to the project? And how does it sound, if you import the exported file back to Cubase to a new project?
I am using Elements, so do not use the control room. Importing the file back into the project and into a new project both result in the volume being normal and the same as when I was composing it in the project.
I have seen other discussions about checking the volume is similar to Spotify, and for me it is when in the project, but not when playing the file back on Windows Media Player or on my iPhone.
Thank you for taking the time to respond
Hi,
If you compare with other player, make sure, the Volume of the player is set high enough.
How is your Stereo Out fader set? How the Stereo Out meters look like? Do they go until almost 0? Do you use any compressors/limiters on the channels and on the Stereo Out?
My stereo out fader is set to 0, and the meters are around or even slightly above 0 most of the time. I am not using compression but I am using a 3rd party guitar plugin for my guitar tracks, as well as the SSD5 drums. Thanks
Cubase is using an independent audio system. You can turn volume up in Cubase and at the same time down in Windows. The result is that everything in Cubase will be louder than anything in Windows.
Basically you have two different boomboxes with two different volume dials.
How can I get the exported file to be at a similar volume to everything else? Because on my phone I have to turn my headphones nearly to the maximum to be able to hear it properly, whereas YouTube or Spotify are usable at under half volume, same on my pc.
Hi,
This is the art of mixing and mastering.
Use the proper EQs, Compressors, Limiters… on the single tracks and also on the Master.
Did you have the time to have a look at the link that @almaelectronix posted above?
I’ve had a look, and it looks like I have a lot to think about! Thanks
