To indicate ‘Moderato h = q’ during a multi-bar rest, should I enter it as staff text? If I use staff text, do I need to input it individually for each instrument? Some instruments have notes, while others only show multi-bar rests, so the tempo marking needs to appear in the multi-bar rest.
I recommend to split the multi-bar rest at this bar in Engrave Mode or insert a double barline, and use System Text for the tempo mark – and a hidden real tempo mark if playback matters.
How can I notate ‘h = q’ when entering it as System Text?
This might be a situation where right-click>Insert music text is useful.
Right-click → Insert Music Text, there are also notes.

How can I create a tempo marking like ‘Adagio —’ with dotted lines in System Text? Do I need to use Insert Music Text?
Can you post a picture? I don’t see what you mean here…
In the violin part, the tempo marking ‘Adagio —’ appears after the split into 3/5. Is there a way to merge it into 8 and then have ‘Adagio —’ appear?
What does the dotted line represent? Adagio means a fixed tempo.
PS: Splitting multi-bar rests into phrases or significant changes can be extremely helpful for the players even in addition to cues.
This is certainly not something that I’ve often seen (never, actually) but if you really need something like that, use a gradual tempo, change the text in the properties, put the gradual change to 100% and use the dotted line…
Or use the line tool. But I’d rather use the first solution.
When I enter a gradual tempo, the violin part gets split into 3/5
It should be in 8, and the tempo needs to be positioned accordingly. The other instruments should follow the original notation.
You’re right, this is what I get.
This is how Dorico shows tempo changes when using multi-bar rests. I don’t think it’s possible to have anything else. Just checking in Gould to see whether that is a new way of doing those things (quite elegant, if you ask me).
Gould, p.565. It’s there, and it makes sense.
In System Text, can I use Insert Music Text to include dotted lines as well?
I don’t think so… Dotted lines are lines, not music text.
