Modern Orchestra clarinet section notes

From another clarinetist.

The reason for Dorico to have a D clarinet is if you want to copy a score exactly as written. Liszt used it.

A dedicated E-flat is needed if you’re writing for bands.

I can think of a few works that weren’t mentioned yet that uses a sax(s). Bizet ,L’Arlesienne. Saint Saens, 1st Sym. Ravel, Pictures at an Exhibition. Rachmaninoff, Symphonic Dances.

I started writing this reply too, yesterday, but then I reread the OP’s post #2 and saw he was talking specifically about the Modern Orchestra template.

Yes thanks. I have no beef with the instrument if you want to write for it and know somebody who has one (I would love to get my hands on one), the mistake is to imply it’s part of the modern orchestra, which it is not. And really problematic that the bass clarinet isn’t included while this is.

Years ago, I had an opportunity to buy an A flat clarinet. I’ve been kicking myself ever since for not doing so. I’ve seen parts written for it in German band music.

Thanks Dan!
