Instead of holding a modifier key to disable snapping, I had an idea:
Hold Alt to temp snap to 16th notes. (When dragging an event while holding the modifier key it will snap to 16th notes until you release the modifier key). Maybe not Alt; could be a unique custom key.
Or hold the modifier to lower the resolution by one. If I’m on 1/4 beat then holding the key will snap to 1/8th. This is good when you’ve recorded a MIDI score and now have to polish it a bit by nudging some notes around to be where they’re supposed to be. But you don’t need to disable snapping, just have the lower grid resolution.

What would work is a macro that has the trigger = “while held down”. And a macro command: “go back to previous grid type value” (Not prev/next which just means smaller/larger. That is helpful but not here. A “go back to what grid snap you had before you held the key down”).
I don’t think these things exist in the key commands. I would hold down a key, maybe the tilde ` key. It would change the grid snap to 16th notes while I’m holding the tilde. When I let go of the tilde it would revert back to whatever it was before I held the key.
From my use case, I always need to have under the control the exact value. Therefore, I always want to set the exact Grid size, so the `Set Quantize to X¨ commands work for me perfectly.
