I want to unmix a song by calling the Unmix Song module multiple times. First I want to split audio into guitar and other. Then I want to split the resulting other stem into bass and other. After that I want to split the resulting ‘other other’ stem into piano and other. And so on…
For this I add multiple Unmix Song modules into the chain. I can specify which layers they will process. So I can input ‘Other’ into the layer settings.
Now the problem: run Unmix Song once, and you’ll get two layers: Guitars and Other.
Run Unmix Song again and you’ll get the Guitars layer (which is unchanged) and the Other layer gets converted into a group with a Bass layer and new Other layer.
After that Unmix Song doesn’t work again, because it tries to process the Other group and not the new Other layer.
I’m now looking for a way to either specify the correct Other layer (is there a special syntax needed?) in the layer settings or a way to rename it in the Modules chain.

I’m just wondering if you feel you get improved separation by doing one instrument at a time?I suppose what I mean to ask is, are you testing an idea you have to hope to get cleaner stems? Or have you had success with such a workflow?
Yeah, I’m trying to find out if successive stem separation will create better results, but it’s really time consuming to try multiple songs with different separation orders without the ability to simply let it run for an hour without the need to manually start the next step every five minutes.
I have never used the Module Chain before - so I’m not entirely certain - but doing a quick test I don’t think it is possible right now. We would need an automatic way to rename a certain layer/group, or a function to move a layer around, or a more specific selection for either layer or group (or better, a group with matching name should just be ignored, as it cannot be processed anyway).
Yes, either the name should change, for example Other, Other 1, Other2 etc. Or the user should be able to enter a layername in the Unmix Stems modules. Or it should be possible to specify the layer names in the modules chain as Other>Other>Other or something similar. Or groups should be ignored if the Unmix Stems modules cannot process groups.
I pretty much spent the entire day unmixing music with SL12 and SL11 today
seems to me, the better the mix=better separation results. I mostly did unmix song and unmix drums (unmix process run one time). I find other guitarists than I get unmixed into the guitar layer. My guitar playing usually ends up in Vocal and/or Other layer
There is a ways to go with the tech. Drum unmix is clearly improved.
I guess I need to move on to the other new SL12 modules like unmix instrument and soundtrack
