Why is dorico allowing the lyrics to collide with these chord symbols?
In the layout options, I have my minimum staff to 2 ½ spaces for the parts (it’s less in the full score)
Any ideas? Thanks!

Geoff, I see you have put in System breaks.
Have you also put in Frame breaks - or a Layout Option for a fixed casting off?
You might have taken Dorico the opportunity to space everything out properly.
Also in Engrave Mode have a look at the percentage indication at the bottom.
It should not have the colour red/percentage over 100%.
thanks kb - no casting off in the layout options, and no frame breaks either as far as i can see, only system breaks.
BUT, the percentage at the bottom is over 100:
ok., then I would turn the last System break into a Frame break.
There are a few discussions and explanations on this forum why Dorico in certain cases can’t do this calculation automatically.
gotcha - force it to work is ok with me, did plenty of that in finale
But as I’m rewriting my lead sheet template with each project, I’d like to get my settings as ideal as i can
thanks kb!
You could try changing the Inter-system gap in Layout Options to a larger value.
I’d agree: don’t expend the effort of putting in manual System Breaks on every line, if you can get Dorico to do the work for you. Choose a Note Spacing value that provides you closer to the result you want, and then only use a couple Breaks where needed.
I did adjust the inter-system gap, and that seemed to kick dorico into a better looking spacing. Strangely, I adjusted it to be smaller rather than larger, though: from the default 8 spaces to 7 ½.
Do you really need so much space between the lyrics (vertical spacing for two lines)? The default is quite big, I usually set it to 1/2…
As soon as I saw your first picture, it was clear to me that you had a vertically overfull page, because if you’re under 100% Dorico does not behave this way
Make sure to keep it under (or equal) 100%
I don’t need that much space between verses, but IIRC I didn’t change the default spacing.
Adjusted to ½ space per your suggestion, and indeed the lyrics are closer together, but it didn’t seem to resolve the global spacing issues. Also, stangely, it seems dorico has more space between the lyrics and chord symbols on the next system in one system pair than in the next:
Yes, often a smaller inter-system ideal gap, or minimum gap between systems, gives Dorico more flexibility to avoid collisions and vertically justify. Space that was previously dedicated to pushing systems apart can now be used to avoid collisions.
Gotcha, thx. will keep that in mind
