I’d like to create hairpin “rise and fall” markings (as seen in the attachment) after note entry. I (think) I understand that this could be done at the point of entering the notes, but for my habits, I’d like to do it afterwards. I also (think) I understand a work-around of sorts, in which I enter the notes without ties, add the hairpins, then tie the notes together. For whatever reason, this seems inefficient to me.

Otherwise, in note input mode, place the cursor where you want the hairpin to start. Shift-D, add just the < and enter, then move the cursor to where it should end, Shift-D ?, or add the > and move to the next place and so forth.
Thanks so much for these helpful instructions! I have tried the note input/cursor method before, but must have done something wrong. I’ll try again. I think this would be the most flexible method for input, as it will give different possibilities for note length/tie combinations. Life won’t always be whole notes tied together!!
HaHa, yes, as I just discovered! I could not put into words what I just tried to do, but after a couple of readings of your instructions, I got it! (I think…I hope… If not, I’ll be back. )
I’m going to leave this open for a bit to see if there are any other ideas (or even “amens” to yours), though I think you probably have the definitive answer.
