So this topic has been discussed on here for years in different forms and shapes, but as I keep reading the newest threads and the corresponding replies from the Steinberg team member(s), they all mention that the current setting is a ‘feature not a bug’ and that if we’d like it changed, one should create a topic with a feature request.
So here I am. Not the first, probably not the last, but I think I’ve come up with a decent, obvious solution, that I think would help tremendously to all types of cubase users.
The problem:
Navigating and scrolling around the session and the mix console is a risky task, as it is too easy to inadvertently change mixing parameters while navigating around the session and the mix console using the mouse wheel.
The Solution:
In my opinion, there is no need to change this behavior in plugin windows and in the channel setting window, as scrolling within those windows is rarely required. I’m only coming up with a solution to navigating around the session and the mix console, especially in large sessions, fear-free. (Like in that other DAW, that offers professional tools, which god forbid I mention its name in this forum)
In the cubase settings window, add this setting:
Mouse Wheel Parameter Control In Session and Mix Console
Options:
-
Always Enabled
Mouse wheel adjusts ALL parameter controls when hovering over any adjustable parameter, including faders, knobs, pans and sends, both in the session and in the mix console -
Require Hotkey [Set Hotkey]
Holding a hotkey activates parameter control adjustments when hovering over any parameter and using the mouse wheel as mentioned above. This could raise further issues with other hotkey functions and will need fine tuning and/or workarounds. For example, Shift would not be a good hotkey for this task as it is used for horizontal scrolling. However, I’m sure the development team will be able to come up with alternative hotkeys or other solutions. This is not a deal breaker in my opinion. -
Disabled (REALLY disabled, please. NOT like the current setting).
Mouse wheel NEVER changes any parameter when hovering over any knob, fader, send and any other parameter in the session or in the mix console. Mouse wheel is used for scrolling only in those windows.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk. This may need more work and I’m sure we can discuss the matter to death, but at the end of the day I think that every mixer should be able to feel safe while scrolling and navigating quickly around their sessions. oh OOPS I think just sent more vocals to a reverb track as I was scrolling the mix console, gotta go to my backup session to match the send parameters, see you later!
