I don’t understand the functionality of this feature. I was already disappointed when they moved the ability to just select a bunch of tracks, right click and choose to put them under a new folder, to a submenu.
But the “Move selected tracks (wait for submenu) to new folder with group channel” is rather pointless. It doesn’t completely behave like a proper group channel, which you can toggle in the zones tab to add to the right side of any mixer. In these supposed group channels created from selecting a bunch of tracks, that’s a group channel that in the zones tab, has no dots to move it to the right side.
So you have to keep clicking on them to collapse that group and just show the group channels. But it doesn’t stick as the ones with the dots that you can really stick to the right side, and nothing will change them. For example, if I do a render in place, it will start showing all the new audio tracks, something I want in one mixer, but not in the mixer that I have dedicated to just group channels and FX tracks and all that.
So what’s the point of these group channels that are kind of like real group channels but not completely so? It’s rather confusing and pointless.
The Folder withe Group Channel has the same behavior as all the other folders. There aren’t any folder types that can be configured to use Zones. You can configure the contents of the folder to use whichever zone you want. The folder itself is just the container for the group channels.
The “Folder with Group Channel” automatically routes any audio tracks you drop-in, to the folder–which could be routed to a Group Channel (like “Mix Keys”) or an output such as Stereo Out. When you want to add some new audio tracks to a group, you can do it without manually changing the routing. From what I can tell, that’s the point–to simplify the process and save time.
As for adding MIDI tracks to a Folder with Group Channel–I’m not sure how that would be useful.
It’s not directly related to your question–but in your screenshot it looks like you have your “All Strings” group, and FX tracks in the Input/Output folder, and your Stereo Out in the Group folder. Maybe it would be “cleaner” to use an FX folder for the FX, the I/O folder for the Stereo Out, and the Group(s) folder for the Group channels and Group Channel Folders.
I haven’t used the folder with group channel in any projects, yet–but if I did, I’d put those folders in my Groups folder.
I guess, but wouldn’t it be much simpler if the group channel created this way behaved like a regular group channel? If you press F4 to open the window with the group and FX channels, they even have the same icon, both the group channel folders and the actual group channels.
That’s weird, I don’t know why the stereo out channel went into the Groups folder, normally I have it in the I/O folder.
Edit: actually, the Stereo Out channel was in the I/O folder:
The Folder with Group Channel does something special that can’t be achieved with a regular Group Channel.
If you don’t need that, you should probably be using “Add Group to Selected Tracks” instead. It will create a new Group Channel and route all of the selected tracks to that channel:
