Moved to a new environment for a 5-day project and can't get Dorico to playback

Yesterday, I traveled with just my laptop to a remote site a LONG way from home to work on an intense 5-day writing project. Unfortunately, although I am 100% certain that MIDI is working (reasons given below), I can’t hear any sound on Dorico output. Here are the details of my setup and what I’ve done so far to try (unsuccessfully) to find the problem:

I’m using Dorico 6.1 with NotePerformer 5 and an M-Audio Keystation49MK3 which was given to me to use for note input when I got here. It works fine and I can enter MIDI data into Dorico without problems EXCEPT that playing multiple notes for a chord into a piano system only gives me a SINGLE (non-piano) SOUND although I get a complete representation of the chord I played (clearly not my biggest problem). I have gone to Preferences and Reset Audio Engine Data and restarted Dorico. When I look at Play mode, I can see that MIDI data is being sent to the playback engine even though there is no sound. I have tried various combinations in Edit –> Device Setup and am currently on BlackHole 2ch. In the Mac System Settings –> Sound, I have Input set to BlackHole and Output set to Macbook speakers.

As a reality check, Logic 10.8 is running without problems in both MIDI IN and OUT functionality.

I’m sure I’m missing something really obvious. Any suggestions?

This seems like a known (and hopefully soon to be fixed) bug with MIDI through. If you esc and then enter note input again on the piano, does it revert to a Piano? If so, you hit the bug.

Yeah, I’ve experienced this bug before…and, in the present setup, hitting ESC doesn’t seem to affect the problem.

However, my bigger problem at the moment is that I can’t hear anything when I playback a score, even though I can see in the Play mode that there is MIDI data being sent to the appropriate instruments. Not hearing playback means I have to export a MIDI file to Logi where it doesn’t sound that great…but more importantly, at the moment I working on transcribing some tunes off of Spotify to use as lead sheets for the larger project and having to go through this multi-stage process to hear anything is very time consuming and frustrating…expectially because I think it’s something obvious I’m missing since things work fine in my home studio which isn’t very sophisticated and is built around the same laptop and a couple of similar keyboard controllers.

Sounds like you don’t have to use Logic and Dorico at the same time.

Sometimes in Dorico the Audio Output Device box gets unselected.

So, in this case let’s skip Blackhole completely: Make sure Logic isn’t running.

1. Set your Mac’s system audio output to MacBook speakers.

2. Then go to Dorico: Edit → Device Setup and set your ASIO Driver as Built-in Audio.

3. Click Device Control Panel and select your MacBook speakers as the audio output.

You might want to restart your Mac once if things don’t start working right away, but it might be simply unnecessary.

YES!! I have real sound and full chord input. Everything sounds like a brass choir even though I have Soprano and Piano as my current input staves. But compared to the last two hourse, I’m a VERY happy camper. Thank you SOOOOO much!!

Now, I’d like to understand what the heck happened to cause this problem. I guess the take-home lesson is “Check the Device Control settings in Device Setup.

Go to Play → Playback Templates, select “Auto”, Apply and Close, then open the dialogue again and select “NotePerformer” and click Apply and Close.

I’d input and work on the music using Dorico’s own sounds, the “Auto” Playback Template in order to avoid the 1-second delay on playback and the ability to have real-time recording if you need it. Then I’d export the final versions using NotePerformer’s audio.

It might be worth it to reboot your Mac once.

The audio output port gets unselected at times when connecting MIDI devices or plugging in headphones or speakers etc., for example.

Thanks. Before I saw this, I decided to start a completely new file and just copy the voice and piano parts of the one I stuggled to make with all the problems detailed above. It sounds perfect so clearly in the connundrum of Device Setup issues, some other things got confused.
I will take your advice RE using the Auto playback template because I am planning to do some real-time MIDI recording at some point. I assume that once I have a final version, I a final version created with the Auto playback template, I can change the playback template for my file to Note Performer and the export the audio using that playback. Correct?

Thanks again for you help. I sincerely appreciate it!!!

Yes, that is absolutely correct regarding switching to NotePerformer at the end of the project to export final audio.
