Moving measures

I’m trying to move measure 5 to 12 to the previous page to avoid that ugly blank space at the beginning of the score and then have the rest of the score adjust accordingly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Select measures and make into frame?

Hi @Glen_Irvine, if you switch on the visibility of signposts, do you have a frame break at bar 5?

If not, then for some reason Dorico calculated that the second system doesn’t fit into the first page.

You could experiment reducing slightly the Inter system gaps value in Layout Options>Vertical Spacing, or decreasing the Music frame margins, or the Page Margins, etc…

If you upload the Dorico Project, we can give a suggestion, based on context.

(The suggestion by @billstevns of using Make into Frame is of course possible, but may be there are better global options as I mentioned).

Also: you have a page override in the first Page. Don’t you need the Project Title and the other layout given by the default Firs Page template (which is now overridden)?

I think @Christian_R is right - you appear to have both overrides and template changes on the first two pages which are probably preventing Dorico from doing what it wants.

Thanks guys…what a great community. Here’s the project file. There’s a Frame Brake at measure 5 and it seems there should be enough space to move the bars to the previous page. I’m missing something in my knowledge ( obviously ). Regards, Glen

Which causes the new page. Delete it!

(Also I’d delete all the system breaks until you really want to finesse the layout)

Thanks for you help Janus but I’m pulling my hair out. Deleted the Frame Break in measure 5 which nicely filled the firsts page, but now the first 12 bars are rather squished together. I’ve tried to create a separate frame out of bars 5 to 12 thinking I could keep this
on to page 1 and then shift the rest of the score to the following pages but this creates chaos. Tried a bunch of things but I’m obviously missing something. Just drawing blanks. If y9ou have any idea let me know. Thank you.

Your first frame break had the “wait for next break” property enabled.

Try this: Go to Layout Options > Staves and Systems > Casting Off, and untick the checkboxes for fixed number of bars and fixed number of systems, since it looks like you don’t really want to do either of those things. Then, in Engrave mode, click the Reset Layout button, which will remove all your frame and system breaks.

At this point, Dorico will do a decent job of laying things out on its own, except that a few of the pages are too crowded. One way of clearing this up is to go to Layout Options > Page Setup > Space Size and make the space size just slightly smaller. I changed it from 4.25 points to 4.15, and now everything seems to fit nicely.

Thanks a bunch…I’ll step through your process tomorrow but whatever you did cleaned things up nicely. I’m getting more comfortable with Dorico but many of the layout options, etc. are puzzling but with help from this form and the tutorials it’s coming together. Once again, thanks for taking the time. It’s very much appreciated. Kind Regards, Glen

Hey Aaron,

Thanks once again for the help. I stepped through your suggestions and then moved a few bars to line up rehearsal figures and it looks good. The only thing I couldn’t figure out was where you found the “wait for next break” information. Couldn’t find it in the properties panel. Anyway, I’m learning a bit more every day, especially when it comes to the formatting stuff. Kind Regards.

Make sure you have selected a Signpost for System Break or Frame Break.

If you still don’t see the option in the Properties Panel at the bottom of the screen, confirm that you are in Engrave mode (may or may not be necessary) and make sure to scroll far enough horizontally to see all the applicable properties.
And of you have selected anything in addition to the applicable signpost, make sure you have selected only the signpost.
