Moving rest issue

The rest I want to move doesn’t seem to have a handle? I want to move it accordingly, upwards to the beginning of the staff so that it lines up vertically with the rest of voice 3.

Here’s the file.

Moving rest issue.dorico (1.5 MB)

When you need to move a rest horizontally, you have to change the voice column index of the notes which are at the same position, as you can’t change the VCI of a rest (which is 0 by default). So in this case you can set the two notes in VCI 1, then you’ll be able to move the rest independently:

(You’ll still have to adjust the slur)

Thanks, Charles

However, when I do this the rest moves along with the other selected notes so I get no handle. (Got to take a break, I’ll be back later)

Strange!

Are you sure you’re changing the Voice Column Index:

… and not the Voice Column X offset or something else?

For some reason it’s working today and I’ve been able to move everything in place.

However, when comparing what it looks like when note spacing is selected, there are a couple of differences.

Yesterday it looked like this (same image as in the first post).

Today it looks like this. The first blue square is connected to different items. Yesterday it was the notes and today it’s the fingering 4. There’s also a red circle above the G. Maybe Dorico was tired yesterday (since we tend to refer to them as human now and then).

The blue squares indicate the position of voice columns, and the red circles indicate the position of notes which have been offset from their voice column. That first blue square isn’t really “connected” to the fingering; it just happens to be lined up with it because you have offset the G and C to the right.

Thanks, Aron!

So that means I must have saved the file yesterday with the “faulty” offset. Still don’t understand why it didn’t work yesterday since I did change the Voice Column Index.

I feel like opening one of my backups if they still are available. Maybe I can recreate this issue…

It looks like you changed the voice column index for all three items on the downbeat (G, C, rest) and then changed the X offset of all three. The suggestion by @charles_piano was to change the voice column index just of the G and C, then change the rest position of the rest, then tweak the voice column spacing offsets (not X offset) of the first two voice columns (and tweak the fingering, and the slur).

If you do that, you’ll wind up with separate voice column handles (square boxes) for the rest and for the two notes, and no circular handle.

To be sure I wanted to double-check, so I tried changing the Voice Column X offset but that does not change the position of the first notes. It only moves the rest of items.

However, I’ll mark your post as solution.

Thanks!

But if you take a look at the video you can see that I didn’t select the rest before making the adjustment.

You are welcome!
So in the end, you managed to get what you wanted? I wasn’t entirely sure from your last posts!

Yes. :+1:

I’m only curious to find out what I did before if I did something wrong and if not, what could have happened.

I can see that you only selected the notes – but I can’t see what change you made in the lower panel. I think you changed the Voice Column X Offset, but @charles_piano’s video doesn’t make use of that setting at all.

In the movie the selected notes move to the right. Using the Voice Column X offset doesn’t change their position. So I must assume that I didn’t. I’ve found an older copy from the beginning of August. Think I need to try that one too.

This is interesting!

I have different behavior in two different copies when using the VCX offset. No wonder it’s confusing!

This one is from the 2nd of August.

This one is from the 15th of August, that is yesterday.

There must be some other differences between the files. All I can tell you is that I started with your original file and followed the steps I outlined in my post above (which I think are the same steps that @charles_piano suggested), and I got the results shown in my post. Charles’s video shows the same thing, separate voice column handles for the rest and for the notes.

I couldn’t tell you why they behave differently…

Please go ahead and try them :slightly_smiling_face:

26-08-02 Valse Française short.dorico (1.4 MB)

Valse Française 08-15 short.dorico (1.5 MB)

The 8-15 file has a fingering which the 8-2 file does not, and this makes things react a little differently; I’m not sure why. Without the fingering, increasing the voice column X offset on the C and G moves them to the right; with the fingering, increasing the same value moves the notes next to them to the left.

Still, the steps that Charles suggested and that I reproduced work as expected in both files.

Thanks, Aaron!
