Multi-instrument player setup question

I’m attaching the first couple of bars of the piece that is my current project/obsession/learning piece.
I thought I had set up the WW I, WW II, WW III and WW IV players correctly, but my overall ignorance has gotten in the way, I’m afraid.
What I wanted to do was create a single player staff for each of those, giving me the ability to swap out piccolo for flute on WW I, Clarinet for Alto Sax on WW II, etc.
But I must have messed it up. What happened today as I went to enter notes was no sound coming from the staff. (in fact I couldn’t even enter notes on the staff).
I looked up in the manual how to add instruments to a multi-instrument player, but as I added “Piccolo” to the “WW I” staff (in setup), I suddenly had a WW I staff (with no instrument sound) and a Piccolo staff. I backed out of that mess to a clean save, which is what I’m posting here.
Thanks as always for the great help I know I will receive. You all are a treasure to me. By the way, I’m posting this at about 1:45 p.m. PDT in the US, but won’t get back to it for a couple of hours. Don’t interpret my lack of immediate response as not caring… :joy:

Important note When initially setting these staves up, I chose “Treble staff” as the player.

Thanks for uploading your project.

So, you have labeled your Players correctly (e.g. WW1, WW2,…) but you have also labeled your “Treble staff” Instruments with the same names. You don’t need to do this.

All you need to do is add the correct Instrument to the Player and make sure that the Player is labeled with the WW name you desire.

The quickest fix for you:

  • go to Setup mode
  • open up the Players panel and expand the card of your first WW Player
  • click the three dots next to the Instrument and select Change Instrument
  • Enter the Player name that you want into the Player card.

It seems like you want “WW1, WW2, etc” displayed in the staff labels, rather than the actual Instrument name (e.g. Flute/Picc.)

Here is how you do that:

This is great! I think it might take me some time to wrap my head around the differences between players, instruments, etc. But once I do, I’ll be on my way to getting baseline powers in Dorico…
I notice that in Galley view there are now two staves labeled “WW I”, one presumably flute and the other piccolo. In Page view there is only the one stave labeled “WW I”. Did I miss something?

Nope, not missing anything.

By default, Page View uses instrument changes (Dorico automatically condenses them into one staff per player and adds appropriate labels).

In Galley View, all instruments are visible.

From the manual:
In galley view, all staves in the project are shown. By default, guide bar numbers are shown above each staff and guide instrument labels are shown above each instrument. For players holding multiple instruments, the player name is also shown in guide instrument labels.

Fantastic! That’s what I suspected.
More to come (in another thread, I expect )
