Multi-instrument players are so uncomfortable to use that I just don't use them

Imagine a wind section that has 5 saxophones: alto 1 doubling soprano and flute; alto 2 doubles flute and clarinet; tenor 1 doubles clarinet; tenor 2 doubles clarinet; baritone doubles bass clarinet. The 4 trumpets also double flugels.

Wouldn’t you do the ‘doubling’ with separate layouts, in appropriate clefs and transpositions?

Sorry, I’m not sure I follow. What I mean to describe is a situation in which one player might be switching instruments several times in the middle of a movement or chart.

So instead of having to create 1152 filters and then dig through the list to find the right one, you can just select the staves you want at a given point and filter on them.

Right, I do know this, and I have done it. But it feels clunky to me to have to vertically scroll across several staves, CTRL-clicking each one to create the filter (or switch to an existing filter), especially if some of the staves are already filtered out. In that case, I would need to deselect any current filter, then reselect each individual staff I want to see, and engage the filter again.
