Multi Measures appearing and ignoring system breaks

Hello, Im consistently having this very annoying issue where a multi bar rest is automatically showing up and ignoring all system breaks in write/engrave mode. When I change to print the system breaks appear again, so they are still there, but just not displayed while working in other modes. I have tried turning off multi measure rests in layout options, but this still makes the system breaks not appear. I cant even get the system break sign posts to show up to delete and replace them. What do I keep doing to cause this? And is there any way to disable this from ever happening again?

Here is what it looks like in write/engrave

And here is what it looks like in print

Are you sure you are comparing the same layout?
Multi-bar rests are default for a Part layout, but not for a Score layout. If there is only a single player it is easy to confuse the two.

Thank you for the response! Im honestly not sure, Im still learning the ropes of Dorico. The multi bar rests dont normally appear for me, but Ive been having this happen randomly while inputting notes on different projects. Ive managed to fix this by setting “fixed number of bars per system” in the layout options, but im still confused as to what happened exactly. While im in Write/Engrave, the systems look like image 1, and any system break signposts dont show up when set to visible. When I switch to Print instead, everything is formatted as it was previously.

Here’s the (default) difference between Full Score and Part layouts in WRITE mode… (Here you choose the layout to work on by using the dropdown menu)

However, when you move to PRINT things are displayed differently. You choose which layout to print from the list on the left…

I believe thats it! Thank you so much again! I just turned off fixed number of bars and swapped the layout and the signposts are back again! I clearly need to do more research as to what layouts are and how to work with them, I must of hit some key that swapped between it, and that would explain why all the system breaks appeared to be missing.

The way I think about it is, the music in galley view is music independent of paper. A layout is instructions on how that music should be printed. Full Score layout is all the music, on a certain size paper, with or without condensing, etc. A part layout is a single player on certain size paper, etc. You can make separate full score layouts for 11x13 without condensing, 9x12 with light condensing, 8.5x11 for home printing with heavy condensing, and even whatever size those mini study scores are. A layout with just the strings, or just the brass can be created. All of these are in one project with one source of music information. So, if you modify the music content, all the layouts reflect the change.

This makes a lot of sense, thank you for the great explanation

Also note that a layout could be just a subset of instruments (either as a score or a part).

eg. You might have a Choir + Rehearsal Piano layout (as a vocal score) in addition to the Choir + Full orchestra (full score)…
