Multi-track automation?

I’m looking to automate several tracks at the same time (using the same automation). Is this possible (without copying and pasting automation from one track to another)? I can’t find anything in the manual. Please help me.

If you have no data in the automation tracks, then it can not play any automation.
Every parameter in each track has its own automation lane.

But if you have a DAW controller, you can write automation to multiple parameters with that controller in one go.

Maybe I do not understand what you mean. It could be a good idea to explain it further.

I don’t think so. We can group events and edit:

  • Selecting events.
  • Moving and duplicating events.
  • Resizing events.
  • Adjusting fade-in and fade-out (audio events only).
  • Splitting events.
  • Locking events.
  • Muting events.
  • Deleting events.

And Group Editing Mode for folders. Not sure if automation would work with Group Editing Mode, worth a try.

There’s also Quick Link to temporarily link selected tracks. Haven’t tried it with automation, just with quick things like resetting to unity, but that might work.

EDIT - Just tested automation with Quick Link and it’s possible. You can link:

  • Volume
  • Pan
  • EQ
  • Dynamics
  • Sends
  • Inserts
  • Mute/Solo/Listen
  • Automation Read/Write
  • Routing
  • Selection
  • Record Enable/Monitor

I did a quick loop punch automation with Pro Q to test 3rd party automation and it worked, too. Just make sure you have the same plugin on the same insert slot for all tracks you want to link automation on.

Same with your sends, too. If you have a small verb FX and a large verb FX but have small on send 1 and large on send 2 for one track and reversed it for the other, then tried to automate send 1, then track one will send to small and track 2 will send to large. Nuendo just knows that send automation is being used, not what the end FX is.

I don’t think so. Quick link would maintain the differences in the tracks linked, so there could be situations that QL is doing unexpected things.

But the Link-Group could be the way to go.

I thought that would be the case, too, but so far it seems to work ok. I’m sure there will be times when it gets all weird. I’ll have to play around with it in an actual session someday to see what its limitations are.

You guys are a great help and I thank you. I’ll look at it tomorrow, but it seems ok (although I had tried some obvious things, without concluding).

UPDATE: Here, it only works in multi-track mode for volume and faders. With the mouse, only one track reacts, which is disappointing. I’m going to check with a physical controller (I’ve got a few left in the cupboard, but I’ve sold them as I’m mouse-operated) for CCs (like C11 expression).

I usually group the tracks. When you do so, you can edit what gets grouped, including automation, arming tracks for automation, etc.

I’m curious. Why do you need to do this?

For four parts of a string orchestra, whose basic expression will be almost identical. I’ll make individual adjustments afterwards. With Pro Tools and Samplitude, it works.

Strange. I’ll do a quick screen grab later today after work to better demonstrate what worked for me last night.

Here’s a quick demo of quick link and automating multiple tracks together. Hopefully this is in line with what you were you wanting to do.

As far as editing tracks that already have different parameters, as an example quick linking two tracks with one at unity and the other at -10dB, then automating volume the two maintained their relative distance similar to what a VCA would do. Haven’t tried other different parameters besides volume yet so depending on what you do that might get a little weird, more so with plugins.

Thanks for your attention and help. That said, try it with a midi CC like C11 (expression) on an instrument track. At this point, without a physical controller, you need to use the mouse. You’ll see that the link between tracks doesn’t work. Or I’m missing something.

Is this about automating midi data or the parameters that are available in that Quick-Link window?

Midi data.

Ohhhhhhh that’s the missing piece. Sorry man, I thought you were talking about volume, panning, etc. My bad.

I don’t work with MIDI all that much so I’m not sure on that one.

Don’t worry! Best regards.
