Multibar rests not appearing despite correct Layout Options

Hi everyone,

I’m running into a rather puzzling problem with multibar rests in Dorico and I’m hoping someone can spot what I’m missing.

As you can see in the screenshot, I have a four-part choir layout (SATB) with long stretches of completely empty bars. In Layout Options → Players → Bar Rests and Multibar Rests, “Consolidate: Multibar rests” is definitely enabled for this layout. Nevertheless, Dorico continues to display every empty bar individually.

What makes this particularly strange is that multibar rests do work in some places, for example at the very beginning and at the end of the flow, but not throughout most of the piece.

I have already tried quite a lot:

  • deleted the rests to make sure they are only implicit bar rests;
  • checked that I am in Page View;
  • checked that there is no fixed number of bars per system;
  • reset system/frame formatting and removed system breaks;
  • checked/re-entered the time signatures manually;
  • eventually created an entirely new Dorico project, created the players again and copied the music into it;
  • manually re-entered the time-signature changes instead of copying them;
  • removed music from the players used as cue sources wherever it was not needed.

The screenshot is from this newly created project, and the problem is still exactly the same.

For example, bars 359–370 and 372–383 in the screenshot are completely empty in all four choir staves, yet Dorico refuses to consolidate them into multibar rests. The Layout Options dialog in the screenshot shows that multibar rests are enabled for the selected full-score layout.

At this point I’m at a loss. Is there some type of object, property or project setting that can prevent multibar rests from appearing even though the bars themselves are empty and the relevant Layout Option is enabled?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

There could be an item with duration (perhaps a lyric) that starts earlier in the flow, and “thinks” that it’s supposed to last until the “ah” on the last page.

If you share the project file, we can look at it more thoroughly.

Really? How do I recognize this? To me they look exactly as long as they should be…

I don’t work much with lyrics, but some of the behavior here seems odd. In bar 33, for example, if I enter “Ah” and then press the spacebar 3 times to cover the three notes, Dorico puts the lyric extension all the way on the next note, not the next rest. (Which is what prevents the multi bar rests.)

Is this expected? It seems like Dorico should be smart enough to end the extension at the eighth rest in bar 35. Is the correct working method just to press space twice, and then use Shift+Alt/Opt+right arrow to get the lyric just to cover the eighth note?

Yes, it seems odd. You can tell by that there is no attachment line when you select it. It should attach to the note where it ends.

Yes, thanks, I noticed that. The behavior is not what I would expect, and I would also think that Dorico should draw that endpoint somewhere, even if the target is many bars away, to make clear what’s happening.
