Multiple hairpin input in middle of bar

Hi,
This is a question on behavior of gradual dynamics input. Say I want to add a hairpin form the middle of the bar across all instruments.

I activate the caret, place it in the middle of the bar and extend it across all staves as shown in figure 1.

  1. If I use the Dynamics panel and click on the crescendo hairpin, I get it but only on one instrument as shown in figure 2.

  2. If I open the dynamics popover and and write the harpin symbol “<” (figure 3) and hit “enter”, I get nothing.

  3. If I write two “<” symbols in the popover, I get exactly that as shown in figure 4.

  4. If I write a p in the popover I get a piano dynamic across all instruments.

I am just wondering what I am missing on the logic of inputting gradual dynamics. What I want is a hairpin starting in the middle of the bar for every instrument.
I can get it done in other ways, but I am just curious on why I don’t get anything when I type “<” in the popover, but I do get two hairpins when I type “<<”. I sort of want the same behavior for immediate and gradual dynamics

  • First, activate and extend the caret to all the staves

  • Second, press Shift+D > “<” > Enter (this gets you to your Figure 3)

  • Third, and while the caret is still active, navigate to the rhythmic position where you want the hairpin to end, and then press ?. This tells Dorico to stop the open-ended dynamic.

Another option to end the hairpin is to enter an immediate dynamic that you’d like displayed at the end of the hairpin - the hairpin will automatically appear.

Where is this ? key physically located for you?
In the EN-GB keyboard it should be the Shift plus the key to the left of the right Shift key.
I normally insert the hairpin, then set rhythmic grid, then use the spacebar.

The Enter key that I mentioned should actually be Return. Sorry for the confusion.
