I’m using 14 stereo subgroups into a stereo master bus for my desktop machine but once the project moves to the live laptop I am hoping there is an easy way to move all the subgroups directly into the multi outs supported via USB by the Wing Rack mixer.
Is this where Virtual Outs come in handy? I’m hoping there is an easy way to go from my main computer (where I edit and prepare the VST live project) and all my subgroups can easily appear routed correctly to minimize any last minute human error at the gig.
Prepare everything on laptop to avoid any mistakes. This way everything you hear in your rehearsal will be the same on stage. I do that way and have no problems.
But if you prepare everything on desktop, then copy project with all assets to laptop and have the same hardware on stage, why do you think about virtual outs? You cannot assign virtual outs to your hardware outs. They are interconnected - O1 → I1, O2 → I2 etc.
More about virtual in/outs: As I mentioned, the virtual out 1 (O1) is connected to virtual in 1 (I1). Then O2 → I2 and so on. For example: Microphone → Stack 1 → Virtual Out 1 → Virtual In 1 → Stack 2 → Stero Out. In this way you have two stacks and in the mixer you can send Stack 1 to FXgroup1 before the Stack 2… And so on. There can be thousands of examples how to use virtual lines (Cubase team could steal this idea!). It’s good for recording - you can bounce some tracks to one etc. You can route (send) live mics and instruments to virtual lines, then sum in one audio in and record live.
Take in count - you cannot record group, but you gan route group to virtual out, then create stack (or audio track) and as input select the virtual in with the same number. This way you can record the signal that goes through the group. Also you can leave the route of the group to Stereo Out to listen it as it is and use Sends to send group to the Output that is connected to virtual out (in Connections).
I didn’t mention “That simple” because it is simple only when you understand
The virtual outs - ok I get they are used for something other that what I thought -= I am doing zero live recording or processing – only playback - so that helps !
I have no stacks or anything like that so it’s a pretty dumb setup by all accounts. No recording, no real-time processing on VST Live, nada.
Managing my complete project in multi-out , but when just using stereo system:
I set all my Devices/Connection/AudioOuts to the same stereo out (laptop speaker).
VL will remember to all your different devices to re-set outputs how they were used/patched
Generate as many Audio Out ports as you will need with the Wing and assign them to your Output. I think this will be the same on your desktop machine. So every Audio Out will have the same link. After that when you transfer the project to your laptop with the Wing, assign those created Audio Outs to the the specific Wing Port. Next time VSTL will remember, depending on your hardware setup, which assignment to use.
