I have a piece in which 2 players share single physical instrument - marimba if it matters. Player 1 is playing the marimba at one point in the piece, then later in the piece Player 2 takes over, then at yet a further point both players are playing the same marimba at the same time.
I can handle this thru brute force - create multiple marimbas in the score, but I’m hoping there may be an easier solution. Any other thoughts of how to handle this? Thanks!
Maybe it’s me, but it just seems kind of messy. You have Marimba 1 & Marimba 2 - you then have to do renaming and keep things straight. It’s not terrible - I’m just hoping that maybe there’s a more “eloquent” approach - that’s all.
Yeah I’ve had this same concern as well before. I usually use the tokens to auto generate an instrument list in the front matter, but these situations result in giving the instrument list two marimbas, so it looks like you need two of the same instrument instead of one. It might not be a very easy problem to solve technologically though, or in terms of user interface.
A possible workaround suggested before was to put each one in its own “group” so they get numbered separately.
There’s no way to have the same instrument shared semantically by two different players in Dorico at present. It’s not inconceivable that we might implement this in future, but for the time being you’re better off using two separate instruments, even though it can require a bit of additional work to handle the numbering.
Isn’t this similar to 4-hand piano? Two players, each with a separate grand staff for their own part. Whether it’s the same instrument or not doesn’t really matter. There are 2 parts. I would just add a note to the preface that it’s intended to be one marimba.
Hi Daniel - That is indeed what I did. However I’m encountering another (and to my mind more serious) problem. I’ve opened up a new topic since it is different enough - see here: Display both the Player Name and the Instrument
