Multiple rehearsal mark enclosure

Hello, I am coming from Finale and and I am trying to figure out how to use two different types of rehearsal markings with different enclosures.

Example, all rehearsal letters have a square enclosure and all rehearsal markings that are bar numbers would be enclosed in a circle.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the Dorico forum! I’m afraid it’s not possible to have different enclosures for different flavours of rehearsal marks, at least not without clumsy workarounds.
(You could always use system text with various styles, like if you absolutely need to reproduce some original source, but it would be a terrible job to keep everything in order in music that’s still changing dynamically, like a new composition of your own.)

This is almost what you describe.

Leave the settings for rehearsal marks at default settings.

To get a different style of enclosure for bar numbers, go into Library > Paragraph Styles > Bar numbers and enable Border, choose Border style: Capsule, and set an amount of padding for top, bottom, left and right.

To show a bar number: select the barline, right-click and choose Bar Numbers > Bar Number Change… , then click OK.

The other way of doing it is Layout Options > Bar Numbers > Appearance > Enclosure type: Circle.

Thank you for the response, unfortunately, I’ll have to stick with the same enclosure shape and resize the measure number rehearsal marks. I do hope Dorico gives us a little more freedom in this area in the next versions.

Thanks Steven! This is helpful, but it may mess with my measure numbers under the staves in general. My arranging style/workflow was developed in a Finale environment. I had a key command for rehearsal letters and a different one for rehearsal measure numbers. I’m trying to navigate this new system and see how I can set up my charts in my own style.

You can have your measure numbers below (under) the staves in Dorico, too. Go to Layout Options->Bar Numbers.
