In a large scale orchestral work, I have two separate instances in which I want multiple staves to display in one string part – at one time, I want three staves in the viola part; at another time, I want three staves in the bass part. In each of these instances, I intend for these string sections to subdivide into three separate sub-sections playing different music, and then to rejoin into one section again, playing unison when the passage is over.
When writing the work, I simply used three viola Players and three bass Players, and that worked fine for the score format. But, now that it is coming time to extract parts, I realize that I want all three viola parts displayed in score format in one Viola part (rather than one full viola part, and two other viola parts that are almost entirely made up of rests, apart from these few bars.) Same story with the bass part. I tried to add instruments to the first Viola Player, and to the first Bass Player, but it does not show that as an option. Is there a way that I can include all of this music within one part for each instrument?
