Before I start, please let me clarify that I am not trying to run multiple versions at the same time; if I were to do that, then I could easily see conflicts arising. Rather, this question is about closing one version and opening the other on the same computer as needed.
I have licenses for two versions of Dorico. I recently moved to a new computer, to which I also moved my old Dorico 3.5 license. No problem there, as my license is on the USB-eLicenser. (And yes, I made sure to move away from the soft-eLicenser, but I would have had to do that anyway to complete the transfer.)
I then installed Dorico 5 on the same computer (which my old computer did not support). No problem there, either. But if I close that window and then open Dorico 3.5 again, I get an error message about Dorico 3.5 playback (see image). If I reinstall the sound library for Dorico 3.5, will this cause a similar message to then appear for Dorico 5?
As an aside - I do not have the Download Assistant installed and would rather not use it if possible. I already have the full installers downloaded so that I do not need to repeat the download when moving to a new computer (see above).
I just want to clarify that this is not an issue of licensing; all of my installations are activated as far as I can see. I am not asking about installing one version on multiple computers, but rather multiple versions on one computer.
Fair enough, but since the v5 installer did not uninstall (upgrade?) v3.5, I am asking if v3.5 is still usable.
Ah sorry – Each major version (3.5, 4, 5…) is entirely separate, and it’s perfectly possible to have several versions on the same computer.
However, you can’t have them running at the same time – that’s mostly due to practicalities with the VST Audio Engine process, which is exclusively tied to one instance of Dorico.
Updates (as opposed to upgrades) – e.g. 5.1.0, 5.1.10, etc – will overwrite an existing version.
Hi @Serioso , benwiggy is right with what he writes.
Regarding that pop-up message that you get in D 3.5, well that is because sound content gets installed globally, so all Dorico versions share the same contents files. But with Dorico 4 or 5 some update took place in the content area and Dorico 3.5 is choking on that, hence that pop-up.
I am guessing that that is the issue here. Playback was indeed missing in Dorico 3.5 for a time, however. I did some tweaking in the Dorico 3.5 Playback Options (not sure exactly what, though) and that restored the playback, but the error message at launch time was still there. At some point I simply dismissed it via the check-box (“Do not show this again”) and everything seems fine. Not exactly a fix, but the functionality is there.
As Dorico 6 has just been released, I hope that the same compatibility of multiple versions on one computer extends to it.
