Music and Text frames relationship in engraving mode

Hi everyone,

I’m continuing to learn new thing and to try master new functions in Dorico; these days I was diving in engraving, various kinds of frames, master pages sets and layouts that I would use both as a musician and as a music teacher…

I found this old dorico blog tutorial, mute but very clear, as usual, about worksheets by the great Anthony Hughes and when I switched to engrave mode I tried to move things (frames) in a different way, just for understanding purpose…

In particular I wanted to create different music frames - instead of one - to alternate with text frames, as I’d created them separately but when I tried to reduce the only music frame size, text frames moved with it (I attach a screenshot of the starting point); I couldn’t find a way to separate them even if I changed constraints in various ways so I ask: aren’t constraints referred to page margins? Why did text frames follow music margins instead? Hope I explained my self well…

Thank you,

Hi @arfo1962, it would be helpful if you could make a video of what you are exactly doing, to see what is happening.

Could be that, having you moved things manually in the music area (instead of in the Template), which causes page overrides, which consequently create problems with Flow Headings positioning, the green frames you are seeing are the now “orphan” Flow heading frames that don’t know anymore where they should be attached? (Again: a video would clarify this).

(what follows can be ignored, if is not pertinent to your question)
If you want to change the Layout directly in the music area, I would suggest to Unlink your Music Frames, so that that they are not anymore M music frames, but become L music frames (you can obtain this clicking on the Frame Chain Filter that appears on the upper left corner of each music frame). After unlinking them, make sure they all have the same second letter (for example they should all be LA), and in case change the linking appropriately. Or you could start fresh and delete the M music frame and recreate new music frames (they will be automatically L frames). Or create a new blank Page Template and start experimenting with it, creating music and text frames…
L frames don’t show Flow Headings (which eliminates the problem of “orphan” Flow Heading frames), so for the title of your exercises you need to enter them as text in the score.

But if you need some solid Project Template for your educational worksheets, I would tend to create customised Page Templates, so that you minimise the need of page overrides, which can bring to unexpected results. But experimenting in “free-lay outing” is a very interesting exercise

(I hope my explanation makes sense.)

HI @Christian_R,

thank you so much for your fast and very clear answer!

In the meanwhile I did some experimentation and I think I’ve finally got it but I did the video anyway and you can see it; following Anthony’s instructions in the attached video I obtain a single music frame and the five text frames are various flows headings so they are not in the master page and before I started moving music frame margins there was no page override… As yo can see text frames are someway ‘locked’ into the one and bigger music frame.

This is absolutely pertinent and it definitely cleared things up for me: unlinking music frame I can resize it until I have only one flow and then I can create other music frames, recalling flows I prefer; this process is very well explained in another Anthony’s video (more recent I guess) and the process is exactly what you suggested me to do and I think it’s way more logical and powerful…

A couple of questions, raised along the way, if you can answer (and I’m sure you are ;-)):

If I create a new page template from scratch does it become part of the existing project Page Template Set?

The same I ask for flow heading…

And if not how can I use them in other projects, given I can ‘t export them individually? (Hope I was clear enough…)

Thank you again very much, hope I can return the favour!

Best,

Hi again, @Christian_R , I answered by myself…

I tried exporting a Default Masterpage Set including my new page and flow heading templates and I could import all of them in another project…

Lot of possibilities do open, I think, great flexibility!
