Mute Affects All Parts

I want horns 1 and 2 open and horns 3 and 4 to echo with mutes. As soon as I mute horns 3 and 4, horns 1 and 2 also play back muted. I tried both VSL and BBCSO to make sure it was not a player problem. Any ideas? Thanks.

Two dumb possibilities to eliminate first:

  • is this somehow a four-way divisi of a single section player? Or four instruments held by a single player?
  • if you solo staves 1 and 2, does the problem persist? With overlapping material like this it might give the illusion of being muted.

Other than that, this is hard to diagnose without a (cut-down) project file.

@hrnbouma. Hey, Hugo. Thanks for answering.

  1. These are four separate horn parts created at set-up; or, more accirately, when I created the template.
  2. I am sure this is not an auditory illusion.
  3. My laptop is packed for travel, but when I get to my hotel, I will soloing parts to see if I can get more information.

This may just be the way NotePerformer works: it may only open one instance of the sample player (e.g., BBCSO, VSL) and that may cause problems if BBCSO and VSL have to switch between muted and open sample libraries.

Since you mentioned NotePerformer in the previous post, I am assuming you are using NPPE. After adding the first instance of an instrument to NPPE, you can add another instance by clicking on Add instrument in the upper right corner of the window, selecting the same sample library, selecting the same instrument, and clicking Add selected. Here is NPPE with four instances of the BBCSO horn with the number of staves per instance reduced to one:

By clicking the arrow at the end of each instance to open the Settings menu and clicking on the three dots after Advanced settings, you can assign a different channel to each instance. This will prevent the muted horns from affecting the sound of the open horns.

Thank you. I will experiment with this.
