My notes are badly spaced

Any ideas about what I can do to fix this?

Check to see if you have this setting on:

If you switch to Engrave mode, you’ll see that the system is overfull, as indicated by the percentage field at the far right of every system.

Yup, I’m set at 4 bars per line. It’s the uneven note spacing that worries me. I can’t get them to even out. Can you see the screenshot I put up there?

Have you tried tweaking the Note Spacing?

(Plus, the systems are overfull)

How large is the Staff Size?

Hi @donaldskoog1
The notes with ledger lines are causing the uneven spacing in your example (beside being the system overfilled), because they need more space that notes without ledger line. You can reduce the ledger lines protrusion in Engraving Options(Notes/ledger Lines globally, or locally from the Properties panel. But undoubfully your systems are overfull. So you can also reduce the Rastral Size, or decrease the Page margins…etc… If you share your file we can give more precise tips.

Ok, I see it. The thing is, I have the exact same thing in the page beforehand and it looks fine.

Because here you don’t have many ledger lines notes from bar 17 to 24.
See my reply above.

And I also agree that from bar 17 it seems very tight too. In fact if you look at the system fullness indicators, you will grasp the fullness immediately:

There are fewer notes with ledger lines on these systems, those take up more space. And I would still call this extremely cramped to be honest.

I really don’t think fixed casting off is a good idea here.

Everything just about doesn’t touch each other; but there’s very little sense of proportion, nor due space for each duration.

Interesting! So I reduced the astral size to 75% and I get this:

Sorry, Rastral size

Here’s a better screenshot

That’s much better.

And you will see (in Engrave mode) that your System Fullness Indicators are now probably green, and under 100%

Before reducing the Rastral Size:

But just a moment @donaldskoog1: it seems that you used the Custom Staff Size under menu Edit/Notations to change the staff size. This is used for other cases (for example to make the staff of Violin smaller, in a Violin and Piano Sonata, in the piano Part).

Your screenshot:

The correct way to change the Rastral Size globally (for the desired Layout) is in Layout Options/Page Setup/Space Size!:
