Naming and grouping of orchestral percussion

How do I get Timpani grouped separately and and percussion 1-4 in another group? I also want only Timpani, Percussion 1, Percussion 2 etc as instrument names on the first page (like the second image below although just “Timpani” and Percussion numbering 1-4).

I believe I have several questions really:

  1. How do I group percussion (or any other instruments) differently than the default?
  2. How do I prevent the automatic numbering for just one specific instrument?
  3. Can I change the automatic numbering to another range?
  4. And how do I change the instrument name completely on the first page of the score?

  1. You can use bracket and barline changes in Engrave mode to change the bracket groupings.
  2. To exclude an instrument from being numbered, put it into its own player group in the Players panel in Setup mode.
  3. You can’t directly change the number assigned to an instrument.
  4. To change the instrument name at the start of the score, use the Edit Instrument Names dialog, accessible via the Players panel in Setup mode:

Hi @JALS, adding to the useful suggestions by Daniel, it seems that you may want to use the Player names as staff Labels (instead of Instrument names), to have Perc. 1, Perc. 2 etc… You can first rename the Full and Short names for the Players, and set then in Layout Options > Staves and Systems > Show player name instead of instrument names.
