I have an orchestral piece with choir. There are of course Altos in the choir, and the violas are called “Altos” as well (in French). Dorico seems to be thus naming them Altos I & Altos II. Is there a way around this ?

Use the Group button in the left panel of Setup mode to put one or more instruments/players in a group. As long as the two sets of “Altos” aren’t in the same group, Dorico won’t auto-number them.
Or name one Alto „Alto „ with a space at the end of the name.
