We need some kind of database of musicians familiar with VST Connect Performer. That would be so useful. I used to just hop on social media > head to a group for players of whatever instrument I needed and have someone read to go on practically no notice whatsoever. It was great.
Now these groups all require posts to be approved by admins, which adds a long delay before anyone can even see it.
Gee, itd sure be nice if Steinberg still had a damn app where musician could network and take quick little jobs like that.
There is BandLab, 32 tracks in beta, web browser based though.
I will want to use it one day with stems exported from Nuendo but if SB come up with something that becomes a staple (not plug-in), rather than a product, which is continually replaced that would be great.
If memory serves collab functionality used to exist within the DAW, but no more.
Yeah, VST Transit. Its what I was referring to. I didn’t know about until after it was already gone, but it seems like something that could’ve been useful for what Im looking for.
I use VST Connect Pro to expand my pool of potential session-players I can call on. The musicians local to the studio might be unavailable, I might not have someone who plays the didgeridoo or some other uncommon instrument a client asks for, or the client doesn’t have room in the budget to pay my local guys what they want to plan their schedules around the session + travel + sit around on the clock waiting until they’re needed. However, a musician thats already sitting around waiting at another studio, or at home browsing social media bored with a decent enough tracking rig in their demo studio, etc. will often take the gig on the spot just to have something to do and accept just about any amount the budget will allow for because its something fun to do, cost them nothing, and adds credits to their name.
What Id like is for there to be like a social media app or something of the sort where musicians can go on keep entertained by discussions and whatnot so that when I need someone on short notice or whatever; I can just hop on their, ask if any guitarists/drummers/pianists/violinists cellists/trumpet/whatever are available for a remote tracking session over VST Connect.
Then, I could narrow it down to who can actually what’s needed and has a quality enough setup for the gig. They could narrow us (the studios/producers/bands looking for them) down by what we’re offering to pay, the status of the artist(s) they’ll be providing their skills to, whether the travks are going to a real engineer at a real studio or just some kid on a laptop who confuses a certain video marketing app for a school, or whatever else they’re concerned about.
I’d pay for that if done right
After extensive use, VST CP is VERY dependant on the performers internet connection of course, and on how they have their machine set up.
Rarely do they have a machine that doesn’t require a little tweaking suggestions from me.
Even though my partner and I are on highest bandwidth ISP with ethernet on both connections (Current M3 and Windows machine) I still cannot retrieve files from their HD fully intact. Not once.
I just record the real time performer track in HD, (lossless) convert to mono and go from there.
It’s a shame Steiny doesn’t develop VST Connect in general to be more robust. I love it when it works.
