Need advice on improving SpectraLayers processing speed

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice.

Here are the specs of my current MacBook Pro:

  • M1 Max
  • 10-core CPU
  • 32-core GPU
  • 64 GB RAM

I use Pro Tools for audio editing, and because of the nature of my work, I often process entire audio files that are over an hour long without splitting them into smaller clips first.

The problem is that processing often takes 30 minutes to well over an hour. The modules I use most frequently are Unmix Song (High) and Unmix Noisy Speech.

Lately I’ve been wondering if upgrading to an M5 Max (18-core CPU / 40-core GPU) would significantly reduce those processing times. Would the performance improvement be large enough to justify buying a new MacBook?

Also, does SpectraLayers still not take full advantage of the Apple Silicon GPU, or has that improved?

I’d really appreciate any advice or real-world experiences from people who have upgraded. Thanks in advance!

If you want to Unmix in SpectraLayers and don’t want to use other tools like Logic or Ultimate Vocal Recover, you basically need to get a Windows PC with a 24 GB (or more) VRAM Nvidia GPU.

I’m on a WIntel machine built in 2018 (specs in my sig)

Unmix Noisy Speech is quite fast on my machine

Unmix of musical content is quite slow…about 10min for any music around 5min duration

I only offer my experience for comparison
