Need help with Cubase and Fantom 8EX as MIDI controller

I just replaced my entire stack of MIDI modules with a Roland Fantom 8EX. I have tried following the advice found here in the forum, but I am hopelessly stuck. Every time I try to start a track The Fantom plays discordant notes, No MIDI out or trigger…Please help and old man whose newest keyboard is my original D-50

I use a Roland FA08 which is the predecessor to the Fantom series. I use it with Cubase 15, and have used with the the previous versions as well.

Take a couple of screen shots to help me understand what’s going on.

Chuck,
Thanks for the response. There is not much to screen shot. I used the midi manager to load the Fantom and I loaded the Roland USB drivers. Here is what is happening, or not happening as the case may be.

  1. In Cubase when I make a MIDI channel, The Fantom plays a “cord” with a long sustain.

  2. Everytime I select a new track, the Fantom plays “the cord”

  3. The Fantom does not trigger or Cubase does not record notes.

  4. The Fantom will not trigger/play any VSTs.

  5. I have put the Fantom in Local OFF and no difference other than I can’t hear it when I play it :slightly_smiling_face: (that at least seems to work)

  6. There does not appear to be a way to “reset” Cubase and start the set up over.

  7. I am using Fantom 6, 7, 8 as my MIDI Inputs and nothing.

  8. I can play my sequences in Cubase and the play as expected. I just can’t record using the Fantom as input device or record or playback an Fantom zones.

Teach me not to stay up on tech :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks

Chad

Sorry about the delay getting back to you, but I’m out of town. I’ll be back in my studio this weekend, I send you another email then.

No problem at all I really appreciate your taking your time.

Thanks again!

Chad

Chad,

I have a couple of questions that will me understand:

What computer do you use -PC or Mac?

What interface are you using?

What version of Cubase?

Did you use the USB port from the keyboard to the computer?

Thanks

Chuck

Chuck,
PC Windows 10
USB connected
Cubase Elements 12
I have the Fantom USB plugged into computer.
I have a Lekato USB MIDI interface that I am using with my D-50
Currently it is not connected.
Other things that may be involved
ZOOM L20 mixer (USB is plugged in)
Cubase is using the ZOOM ASIO

Chad

Chad,

I’m not familiar with the zoom mixer, however I read it can be used as audio interface. Is it possible to bypass it’s mixer capabilities and only use it for an interface? It seems like that’s a good place to start. Also ensure that the Fantom is listed as a VST instrument in Cubase.

Hope that helps

Chuck,
It is getting real interesting. Last night I chose a different scene and wa-la! The MIDI worked! I built up a Cubase template, saved both the Fantom scene and the CUbase file. Today opened it up thinking it would work, and… No MIDI… However, on the Fantom, there are some scenes that have a pink outline. MIDI out from the Fantom works. Switch scenes to a different one and it doesn’t work. It also triggers my D-50 and I have to turn it off.

Can you take a screen shot showing what you’re talking about? I don’t understand. Perhaps it’s a language thing?

Let me see what I can do…

Thanks again!!

Chad

Apparently, I can’t send you links through the forum…

Chad

But you can upload a screenshot, which is a jpeg or tiff file.
Give it a try.
Chuck

Chuck,
I think I got it figured out. By setting each zone to EXT, I can now send to Cubase and playback from Cubase. I have not gotten the fantom to control everything in Cubase but it is now doing what I need it to do…

Thanks for your patience and help!!

Chad

Right on! Glad its working for you!

It is an amazing keyboard, but waaaaay different from my old gear :slightly_smiling_face:
