Newby to Dorico here.
I wanted to input notes in a new bar and decided to try something different by first deleting the rest in the bar. I went to FILE > REMOVE REST > and removed the rest . Realizing that that was a mistake, I pressed the UNDO icon arrow, but no go. I and also tried FILE > RESTORE REST, but no go. I want to return this 1 bar in my piece to normal (with a rest to select for note entry). Because I can’t get it back, I can’t enter notes as Dorico instructs.
I assume that this bar is not the only bar in the piece.
If that is the case, select the last note or rest in the bar before it, open Properties and look for Ends voice (in the Notes and Rests section). If it is active, de-activate it.
Hi Steven,
Thanks for the tip. Yes, this is treble bar 30 of a 32 bar piece. The last notation in treble bar 29 is a 2 note chord. I clicked on one of its notes and went to my Nav bar to find Properties, looking in File, Edit, View, Write, Play, Library and Window. I then clicked on both notes of this last chord and looked but couldn’t find properties.
The Properties panel is the lower zone.
To open it on a Mac press cmd-8.
On Windows it is probably ctrl-8.
If @StevenJones01 hasn’t solved your problem above can you attach a screenshot of the dialog that you’re looking at?
Also, it helps to mention the version of Dorico you are using (3.5, 4, 5.1, etc., and whether it is SE, Elements or Pro), on which platform (Mac, iPad, Windows) and the version of the operating system (Windows 11, MacOS 14, etc.).
Hi Steven and Daniel,
Many thanks!
I really appreciate your responsiveness.
Problem solved.
And thanks for the heads up on identifying my version and platform. when I need help on the Forum.
Slowly becoming less of a newbie…
I am using Dorico Elements 5 (ver 5.1.02068) on a Windows PC.
Happy New Year!
Also no one has yet mentioned that you rarely need to write or delete rests in Dorico! Just write the notes where they go and Dorico handles the rests around them.
except in multi-voice parts - which reminds me, is there a setting to hide rests in all voices automatically when one voice fills that space?
They hide by default if it’s the primary voice with notes (Up-stem Voice 1 unless you changed it). When you have another voice continuing without the primary, you have to hide Voice 1 rests manually.
