New Cubase user - Roland D-50 Stereo Ext. Inst No dry signal, only wet

Hi everyone. I’m coming from Logic Pro and getting stuck into Cubase 15. I’m have a problem with my D-50. I’ve set it up via the audio Connections Window and created an instrument and assigned it to the D-50 midi device.

When I play it back, I don’t hear phasing but the sound is smaller with more reverb. When I remove one channel In the Device Port the sound comes back. When I pan the track last to right it does the same thing- looses the sound in the middle but is normal again hon panned L/R. Is there something I’m doing wrong here. Do I also need to add my inputs via the input Buss as well? (I already added all my I/O’s)

I’ve uploaded some screenshots for someone too check my set up routing

Would be very great full for help!

I figured it out incase this helps anyone

This is a mismatch between:

  • Cubase’s External Instrument stereo summing / pan law behaviour

  • The D-50’s early “true stereo” architecture (decorrelated partials + stereo chorus/reverb)

When an External Instrument is centred, Cubase applies centre-energy compensation that assumes mono-compatible stereo. The D-50 is not mono-compatible by design, so the dry signal collapses and the wet elements dominate.

This is why the sound is correct when panned wide, but wrong in the centre.

I put a stereo width plugin on (BX Stereo) and that pretty much did it for me

Instead you can right click the panner of the track’s channel and switch it to the Stereo Combined Panner. Maybe this one works better and removes the need for an additional plugin.

unfortunately, that didn’t help but thank you. Using a plugin helps but I loose the 3d spacial imaging thats there with the D-50, JV990 & 1080.

Very annoying the signal is not 1-1 the way Cubase handles audio through busses for External Instruments.

OK - so to add more to this it even does it with the D-50 plugin! Pan either side and the sound becomes fuller and less wet but disappears when in the centre/more wet fx?

I’ve looked on YouTube at someone playing the same patch in Cubase and its totally normal which would suggest that its a fault my end.

Would anyone have any suggestions on something I need to change? I’ve already tried the Pan Law at 0 but this didn’t work!
