New Instrument Numbering

Greetings all!
Another question that’s probably simple to answer but eludes me:

need to add a 5th Horn part but its not adding the number or brackets (let alone condensing) to the existing FH section.
Be so kind as to go through the process of adding instruments to existing defaults scores that includes numbering and bracketing.
My humble appreciation

In the instrument picker, there are three options for Horn in F*, representing different notation conventions for the instrument:

  • F No key sig
  • F Sounds 8va Bass Clef Transposed Pitch
  • F Treble Clef Transposed Pitch

Dorico’s orchestral templates use the third one. Crucially, while named similarly and referring to the same physical instrument, technically they are considered different instruments in the software, and therefore not counted together.

So in order to join the fifth horn to the others, make sure to choose F Treble Clef Transposed Pitch from the list. Alternatively, right-click on the Horn 4 player and choose Duplicate Player.

If you want all the horns to follow the ‘No key sig’ notation convention, flip open the player name in Setup mode, click on the three dots, click Change instrument and then choose F No key sig in the instrument picker, repeat for each of them. Any music in the staves will be preserved.

* Confusingly, the list is also in alphabetical order so there’s two F Sharp options in between F No Key sig and the other two. Read carefully!
