New Instrument won't sound

Hi all,

I added an instrument (Sampler) to an existing score. In VST and MIDI I added Pigments, then assigned it to the Sampler, and chose a preset, but no sound comes out.

I’ve added a screenshot of the Play Window.

Any thoughts?

If you click on the button with the stylized e, does the editor window of Pigments show up? And during playback, does in that editor window on the top left a little red “LED” light up with with every MIDI note?
Also check the fader level of the Sampler channel. Your screenshot is incomplete but I can see that e.g. the 7th channel is at minus infinity and thus can not be heard. Is that the Sampler channel?

Yup, when I click on the e the Pigments window opens, and I’ve assigned a press. The little red button top left lights up when I press play.

I checked the fader for Sampler and it’s all the way up. No mute either.

You last suggestion baffles me. Yes, it’s the 7th channel, but what is e.g? and what is at minus infinity?

Sorry, not “press,” preset.

I’ve added another synthesizer, just to check, and it won’t sound in either Analog Lab or Pigments.

The weird thing is that I just changed an existing part over to Cantai and it works fine, but, like I said, it was an existing part.

Your 7th channel is set to zero sound. The slider needs to come up in par with other sliders if you want to hear it.

The sliders for both Sampler and Synth 3 are at 100%

OK. Would you mind showing your entire screen so we can help validate…this last screen shot is different from the original one. Just trying to help. If it’s a problem, I’ll leave it be.

Not a problem.

Also, there are more parts. But I have to scroll up and down to see them all

Also also, both Sampler and Synth 3 are in Port 1 Channel 1, which is weird because they’re the 11th and 12th instruments.

So, is Dorico using an actual external MIDI device to play any of these “instruments?” If not, deselect the teal MIDI box just above the mixer.

You mentioned two voices on channel 1. You will need to set each independent voice on a separate channel in the VST interface (Pigments) and then assign those same channels independently to your Dorico players. You may need to choose your VST that is named something like Pigments Multi to do this. If no Multi, then you should probably have a separate instance of Pigments for each voice using that VST.

Does this make sense? More to come if it does.

It does. Let me play with it a minute.

So in the Track Inspector I have Pigments set to Blossom Etheral. When I go to Sampler or Synth 3, they are also set to Blossom E.

Sorry, I misspoke, both Track Insp and VST are set to Blossom E.

Also, the slider for Synth 3 has disappeared.

The MIDI devices are off and I deactivated the MIDI tab above the mixer.

I’ll delete Synth 3. That will make this simpler.

That’s OK if they are different VSTs.

That would occur because you have the two different tracks set to the same channel of the same port of the VST. It may also mean that you should assign, for example, Synth 3 to Port 1, Channel 2 if the other track is assigned to Port 1, Channel1. Then hit the “e” at the end of the track inspector line for Synth 3 track, and put whatever sound you want going to Synth 3 into Channel 2 of your VST (Pigments).

If Pigments does not have the ability to assign multiple channels, then create a new instance of Pigments for Synth 3 set how you want it. Instead of choosing 06 Pigments, for example, for Synth 3, choose 07 Pigments or whatever number the next instance is that you created under VST and MIDI.

If this doesn’t make sense, include a screen shot after you click on the VST and MIDI tab.
