Couldn’t find this question in the community archive. It may be something other Dorico users aren’t interested in doing. My use case is not writing music notation for performance, but creating simple homework examples of scales, modes, arpeggios, and chords as part of my personal music theory learning journey.
I want to be able to insert a line break and start a new line, and have the next line remain in place. I don’t want Dorico automatically shifting notes up or down on the page if I insert or delete notes or bars. I’ve tried system breaks and frame brakes, but that always seems to start a new page. Is there a setting I can change to make frame break always just do a “new line” instead of “new page”?
What’s the best way to do this? I’m using Dorico Elements, not Pro.
If you want a system break, use a system break!
A frame break is supposed to create a new page, because it needs a new frame. It’s its essence. There is no politics in there, words here have their meaning.
Use a system break exactly where you have that red arrow. If anything happens next that you don’t understand and that upsets you, by all means, report here, we’ll try to help!
How often does this happen? Fluff about for days trying to figure out how to do something, post a question for help on the community website, then immediately figure out how to solve my own problem.
“Split flow” - changed setting to not create new page for new flows - reduced indent setting.
Those grey bar markers at the top of each stave aren’t really necessary for what I’m doing here … can I hide them?
I think the following suggestion for Dorico documentation / UI context help indicators – would assist new users such as myself:
There is ample Dorico documentation guidance along the lines of “Press Shift + B” to do various things. These key commands typically bring up a “popover” graphical input element with a blank space for entering text.
But at this point – as a new user – I’m asking “What can I type in now? What are my options?”
I would normally think “Oh, right, I need to go and read the documentation on what are all the things I can enter into the “Bars and barlines popover” entry field” … but I’m on my own at this point.
My recommendation would be to add a small icon adjacent to each popover that I can click on, that would provide a link that explains what I can type into that popover data field.
I’m not sure what @MarcLarcher meant by “politics”, but I’m sure he didn’t mean it to be snarky. Keep in mind that there are many contributors here for whom English is not their first language.
Why are you so sensitive? Please, just accept the help offered with grace.
You are the new arrival here and perhaps unaware that many (most?) of the helpful contributors do not use English as a first language, so the occasional linguistic error is inevitable. Can we assume you are American?
What I mean is we are now living in a very strange world where words (in politics) seem to have lost their meaning. This is a real deep problem, because you no longer can expect to understand or discuss anything without redifining everything to make sure you are understood. I admit it is totally OT here, since our beloved Dorico team does use the words for the meaning they have.
What caused this reaction is that the OP wrote that system breaks and frame breaks were not doing what they are supposed to do. Which is not true. They do exactly that.
I didn’t want to sound snarky, of course. We all are here to bring help.
