New Part Condensing Issue

My flute player doubles on Piccolo for a few extremely high measures that are out of the range of the Flute.

But when I condense the score, the Flutes don’t combine onto a single line. I also noticed in the Layout Option window that Dorico isn’t recognizing the 2 Flute parts as parts that could be condensed.

I’m not sure where to go with this. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, so much!

P.S. I noticed that the names of the Players wasn’t quite right, so I fixed that but it didn’t make any difference. So, the issue must lie with the fact that Flute 1 Player is holding 2 instruments. But I’m not sure how to tell Dorico to combine the Flute parts onto a single except when the Flute 1 player is playing Piccolo.

Try switching the order of the Instruments, i.e. drag Flute 1 above the Piccolo.

Currently, Dorico will only condense the first instrument of each player (unfortunately). I can’t remember if that means the first in the order of instruments or the first instrument that plays.

That worked, mostly. Thanks. However, I’ve noticed that Dorico only allows you to specify an instrument switch either just before or just after a passage. So, on this page, the Flutes are still separate because it doesn’t register that the Flute player switched back to Flute until the last measure.

It seems like it would be a lot neater if we could tell Dorico to register instrument changes at the beginning of Frames and not just the beginning of the notes. I realize it make sense to place the FL at the notes for the parts, but clearly Dorico knows that the entire line ahead of it is blank and marked the entire line as Flute 1.

Do you happen to know if there’s a workaround for this?

Short of entering the label as text using the Instrument Change paragraph style, hiding it in parts, and then hiding the real instrument change label in the score - I don’t, sorry. (The paragraph style might be named Instrument Change Warning?)

You can influence where Dorico switches instruments by creating a chord symbol region in the instrument that you want to appear earlier.
