New system questions

Considering 2 options (current system below at 4 cores, 2.33, 6 gig ram)

i7 - 6 core with HT, overclocked to 4.4, 16 gig ram - asus motherboard

i7 - 4 core with HT at 3.3 16 gig ram - msi motherboard

about £400 or so difference in price give or take

is it a case of that extra £400 being well worth it, or would I notice much better ASIO performance compared to now at the cheaper option

Appreciate any advices, recently installed a ssd, works great and notice the difference but I realise I want a faster processor now, with sata 111, and faster ram on a new mother board

MSI is the last board i would use…

which 6 core a 3930k? this guy overclocked is insane fast…
which quad? sounds like a Z77 system…

the 4.4GHz is what i would buy…

Its the 3930k

overclocked by Scan, thinking gonna buy a bundle… So I’ll buy the mobo with processor, a PSU, and a case, the rest of the stuff I can take from my existing computer (videocard, firewire card, system SSD with o/s on it, and data HDs for libraries).

Never built before (but they do the Mobo and processor),and I have so much good bits I’ve added to my system I use now, I dont wanna sell it to buy a whole new computer and re install everything

Plus they will overclock it and test it, will cost about £1000 Gulp. But I’ve read that 3930k is v fast and want a system that I can maybe run for 5 years before it needs looking at again

I’ve been trying to determine just how much faster the 6 core 3930k is than the i7 3770k quad core. Is there that much of an improvement for running vsts and such. I’d be looking at 16bg of ram.

look at the 2nd graph @ 32 buffer…

Black is the 2600k which is identical to the 3770k (183)
3930k is not on there but it did 281 over clocked it did 353

this is the old test which is well old…
on the newer dawbenchtest i dont have the 3770. but i do have 3820 vs 3930k stock…

3930K Stock

32 133
64 143
128 145
256 156

CPU: 3820 stock
32: 100
64: 115
128: 121
and the 3770 does not do as well as the 3820.

Woah! So the 3930k is near as dammit twice as fast as a 2600K? What a processor that must be!

I put together a 2600k system about a year ago. I had previously had an old dual core AMD processor which was reliable but nowhere near as powerful. I have yet to even scratch the surface of the 2600k. The 3930k must be a beast of biblical proportions.

Scott, thank you for sharing your knowledge on this forum - really helpful.

Steve.

no not 2 times…

stock vs stock is 183 vs 281… 2x would be 366
now over clocked vs stock 2600 is nearly 2x…

however OCed 2600 is 261.

so 183 vs 281 or
261 vs 353…

i found the 3770k numbers for the new test i knew i had them…

stock 3770k
32 71
64 81
128 97
256 114

3770k oced to 4.5

32 103
64 116
128 123
256 129

compared to…

3930K Stock

32 133
64 143
128 145
256 156

and 150 @ 32 buffer OCed…

This info is really valuable, thanks a lot. It looks like the 3770k is 53% faster than the 3930 @32 not over cIocked.I know its impossible to do but I just wish there was some real world benchmark as to what this means in a project studio. Like how many instances of Kontakt loaded with the VSL samples could a person get. The difference between the 2 cpus is roughly $250 at Newegg; wonder if its worth it.

Thanks again

think you got that backwards…

i finally posted the new tests
http://www.adkproaudio.com/benchmarks.cfm

the 3770 is slower than the rest by far…

Yes , I meant that the other way around. So on a new build is it practical to try and maintain PCI compatibility? I need a new DAW but ,at least for now, want to use my Emu 1820m soundcard which is PCI. I’m hearing that the Asus H77 or Z77 mobos emulate the PCI bus in software and there legacy devices screw with the system. Can new builds successfully utilize older components?

yeah my videocard is pci

but from looking at the mobo I’m considering theres 2 slots for it? So I should be ok

however no on board firewire, I have a card tho

That’s some valueable information!
So do we get a better performance with a 3820 than a stock3770k?
And will my old RME HDSP3296 PCI work ok with an AsusX79 or Z99 motherboard?

as posted above

CPU: 3820 stock
32: 100
64: 115
128: 121
and the 3770 does not do as well as the 3820

stock 3770k
32 71
64 81
128 97
256 114

RME should work in either… wait how old? its its the older “Digi” card then no way…

Great , thanks!

No,not the Digi, just the HDSP9632.I’ve been thinking of switching to Aio but i think i 'll try it first.
