Newbie asks: How to achieve Forte after decrescendo?

Hi!

In Finale I can fade from ff to pp over the length of one bar, or even move the pp to where I want inside the bar, and after that I can start the next note with ff. See screenshot 1.

How can I achieve this in Dorico?

The quickest way that I’d do this is:

  1. Select the B whole note
  2. Press Shift-D for the dynamics popover
  3. Enter “ff>pp” (without the quotation marks!)
  4. Press Return.
  5. Press Shift-Alt/Opt-Left arrow to shorten the dynamic phrase one step, according to the rhythmic grid (which should be eighth notes by default, which will probably work well enough, but you can change that if you like) – you’ll see if you select just the pp that its attachment line is now an eighth before the barline, no longer on the downbeat of the next bar
  6. Select the C in the next bar.
  7. Press Shift-D
  8. Enter “ff”
  9. Press Return

You can also do this whole thing alongside inputting notes or with the caret active, by inputting dynamics where the caret is, advancing the caret and extending the dim, then adding the pp exactly where you want it. But if the notes are already in, the fixup listed above is quicker to do than to explain, I promise!

(You can also move dynamics around in Write mode to other rhythmic positions, meaning that they “happen” on a different beat – they snap to noteheads by default, but they don’t have to; there’s an alternative key command to move dynamics by the grid, which lets you move them to the middle of notes.)
