Newbie Comping Help

Hi all

Cubase newbie coming from Ableton. After a bit of a rough start I was doing well but managed to get into something I can’t seem to fix. I have some medical peripheral neuropathy in my fingers which causes me to unintentionall hit keys on the keyboard and I think I may have turned something on (or off) accidently. This was working an hour ago.

I have an audio track where I have been using the comping features. It has been great, comping for days. Was working on a track and all of a sudden instead of creating a new lane with each comping cycle Cubase simply overwrites the top track. I can see the lanes for other comps I have done and but I can’t seem to create comps in new lanes. It just goes over the top track every time. I know I accidently hit something but for the life of me I don’t know what.

I know there is a really obvious answer to this but I can’t seem to figure it out.

Thanks

Can you post a screenshot showing the problem Track & also one that works as expected. Make sure the problem Track is selected.

same, it sucks

Any chance you created a new “track version”? Not sure if there is a shortcut for that but maybe you found it?? You can see in the Inspector for the channel

Or, maybe you found a shortcut to click the purple Cycle button located in the transport bar. This action activates the Cycle function

Sorry… trying to help but working off of memory for things that change how looping takes work

Thanks everyone. Session image below. Don’t judge me to harshly, this is no pro session I was doing comping primarly to help me write some parts. to share scratch ideas. As you can see, the comps in the lanes worked fine at one point. Now when i select an area, enable looping, and record it just records over the top recording. I can even select an existing take in a lane and record over it. The one thing it will never do is record a take and move to the next lane. I was sitting with a bass in hand doing some comps. Stopped to listen to one. It was terrible. Tried again, and it simply didn’t work.

I am sure the is something really obvious.

You still have this configured correctly?

Yey!. Yes, set to Keep History. I tried to get a screen grab but the pop up kept dissappeaaring. My settings look just like yours.

I think a great feture for a Cubase update for me would be a key logger. It would be nice to have a reviewable list of all of the hot keys I have hit in a project. I may be the sole constituent for that feature though.

Are you by any chance using the Retrospective Record feature when you do the overdubbing? I have found that, when I insert MIDI data that way, rather than through normal record button tracking, it shows up on the same lane as the data that is already there, then I need to use Clean Up Lanes to get the new data moved to another lane. I’m using that for overdubbing continuous controllers, not tracking musical parts, where I tend to do the cycle recording with the normal record button use.

The Edit History should show what you’ve done during the current session whether it was accomplished via a mouse click or Key Command.
