Newbie: Enabled track not recording

Ver 8.5 I have 1 audio track in the project. Audio is getting to it as the track’s VU meter shows; recording is enabled, but when I start the transport, the track does not highlight red and there is no waveform. ??

It’s a 2 step process

  1. Arm the Track(s) by using the Record Enable button
  2. Initiate Recording by hitting the Transport Record button instead of the Start (play) button

Sorry the pic is from Cubase 12 so probably looks a bit different, but the functions are the same.
