Newbie needs help

I need step by step slow help learning Cubase 15 Elements. The tutorial that Steinberg loads automatically when I login to my copy goes much too fast and assumes too much DAW-related background knowledge. I am a notation-first user coming in from Dorico 6, mostly classical in thinking style, though I also do Broadway and Folk. I don’t need to know how to use Synths or ‘Backing Tracks’ (whatever the heck that is) or any other non-playback-of-scores related stuff. I just want to import a Dorico score and have it play back. Period. Have tried. I see the little picture panel with my instruments listed and the pitches they’re going to play in graphical form, and I can make the vertical green line move just fine, but no sound. No idea what to do. I can playback sample files just fine. Just not my own. Suggestions? (I’ve never touched a DAW before, and have no idea how they work. Or why. Think of me as a simpleton, ‘cause I am.)

Hi,

If you can playback the Sample Files, your Audio System and Audio Connections seems to be setup correctly.

Could you attach a screenshot of your project (the Project window), please? I would like to know, if you have MIDI- or Instrument tracks in your project.

If you have MIDI Tracks (and no Instrument Track or Rack Instrument), you have to load one (HALion Sonic SE). Within the instrument, you will need to set the sounds/patches in order to the MIDI Tracks.

If you have Instrument Tracks, you probably have to load the sounds/patches within every single Instrument (HALion Sonic SE, into slot 1).

Well, I just typed (into google) “import dorico score into cubase elements” and immediately hit a bunch of bitesize 12-15minute video tutorials.

Any one of which MIGHT get you a good start…even on what may be a simple explanation that cures your “no sound” thing.

Doesn’t matter that some are 10months ago on cb14 or whatever….the point is to take a look around, when you find one, bookmark it etc and begin learning what you want. Most/all will likely be applicable to Elements 15.

I’ve been using Cubendo Pro for years… will never uncover everything the programs do….so ….when I need to figure out specific, limited tasks, I google in specifics. For sure, I’ll never view an overall how-to video on Cubendo….too time consuming….plus….I already know how to use a tape recorder/console…and how to mic a cello…or kazoo

I own Dorico too. However, to this day, I’ve opened it ONCE….as I’ve had no time to use it

If you want only to playback the score, why doesn’t you just do it in Dorico? You have access to the same sounds / instruments in both programs , I believe (?). What is the need for Cubase Element?

If you want help, you have to make a more step by step describtion of what you’ve done.
(Maybe you just need to asign a sound to the midi track?? Who knows?)

Screenshots of your settings will help.

I need to use Omnivocal, which is included in Cubase but not in Dorico. (Not yet at least.) So far I’ve just tried playing back the string quartet of a small score, just to see if I can figure out how to get it to work. When that works, I’ll try getting the piano part and vocal part going. I haven’t even begun to think yet about how I’m going to add omnivocal into the mix.

I’ll be uploading a screenshot of the quartet piece as shown in the Cubase Project Window, as Martin Jirsak suggested. I suspect that (as you suggest) I do need to assign a sound to the midi track. If I knew how to do that I’d be as happy as a clam. (The tutorial on that subject goes WAY too fast for me to follow. Plus the screen they show doesn’t look like mine.)

Here’s the screenshot you suggested.

Hi my friend. Those are midi tracks so the next step is to press T which will bring up a dropdown box asking you to select the track u need. Select ‘Instrument Track’ then Halion Sonic’. Let me know when u get to that stage and message me with screenshot again and we’ll move to the next stage. I know it can b daunting when using such a powerful tool (been there got the tee shirt as they say!)

I have messaged you, but don’t know how to attach the new screenshot to the message.

Hi,

After pressing the T, the Add Track window appears. In the upper line, select Instrument. Then, below the More Tracks, in the Instrument line, click in the field and select HALion Sonic from the list.

Then click Add Track.

Then, in the upper right corner of the Project window, click on Show/Hide Left Zone.

Then select every single MIDI Track and in the Left Zone (Inspector) in the Routing Tab set the 2nd parameter (Output Routing) to HALion Sonic.

Do this for all MIDI Tracks one by one.

Then select any MIDI Track (it doesn’t matter which one), click on the Edit Instrument, next to the HALion Sonic…

The HALion Sonic window opens. Select Slot 1 on the left side. On the right side at the bottom, click on ALL:

Then select the sound for the 1st slot (1st track) from the list.

Then select slot 2 on the left side, and select the sound for the 1st slot (1st track) from the list. Then select slot 3 on the left side…
