Newly created tracks are always placed inside folders in Cubase 15

In Cubase 15, when I add a new track (Track B), it is created directly below the currently selected track (Track A).

The problem is that if Track A is inside a folder, Track B is also automatically created inside the same folder. This behavior is inconvenient, because sometimes I do not want Track B to be placed in the folder.

I would like Track B to be created outside the folder.

Below is the current behavior.

Below is my ideal track layout.

Is there any setting that I am missing?

Since updating to Cubase 15, it has become annoying to manually drag the newly created track out of the folder every time.

Hi,

Cubase always adds a new folder below the currently selected one. Once you place the track out of the folder, select it and add a new track; this new one will be placed out of the folder.

Once you place the track out of the folder, select it

Ideally, it would be nice to be able to quickly add new tracks outside of folders without having to go through this process. That’s the point of this topic.

Ideally for you perhaps - not for me.

Hi,

You can drag and drop your Track Preset to any place in the project.

My guess is that if you close the folder it will be created under the folder, or if you select the folder and not the track, that might work too.

This is how it works for me.
Time for the addition of yet another option in the preferences?

It’s a bit strange why you’d offer a keyboard shortcut for a single action, then force it to not behave as the user expects. If the shortcut is to “Create Track,” it should just do that rather than “Create Track Inside Exsting/Selected/Last Folder.”

This creates an annoying scenario where you cannot rely on shortcuts because “the interface lies to the user.”

Recent versions of cubase up until now had an option in the create track dialog to create inside folder.

The user interface for C15 is a dumpster fire to say the least.

Stuff that used to work no longer does, while much of the new stuff, while great in theory, also does not work.

While I applaud steinbergs efforts to make a more robust product, they should not be breaking stuff that has been working flawlessly since the 90s.

My experience with C15 has so far been extremely positive. The audio performance and what not has been stellar. But the UI changes have been an unmitigated (so far) disaster.

I thought it was only Group (and/or maybe FX) tracks that had this option?

The option you mention exists for Group and Effects tracks. It still does in C15.

If Steinberg makes the feature behave the other way around then you will complain about the new tracks not being placed inside the folder. Since the selected track is in a folder surely the user expects the new track to be in the folder as well, would probably your reasoning.

I am not sure why you think that you know what “the user” thinks. Have you interviewed 2000 users about their preference regarding newly created tracks when the currently selected one is within a folder?

My guess is that if you close the folder it will be created under the folder, or if you select the folder and not the track, that might work too.

I also noticed this approach. It seems that if I select a folder while it is collapsed and then add a new track, the track is created outside the folder.

â–ĽAdding an audio track while the folder is collapsed

â–ĽExpand the folder afterward

For now, this feels like the best workaround for me. It’s easier to collapse and expand the folder (which can be done via shortcuts) than to manually drag tracks out of the folder every time.

I noticed one more thing. In Cubase 12, when a folder was expanded and selected, adding a new track would create it outside the folder.

In Cubase 15, however, doing the same thing seems to create the new track at the top inside the folder instead.

This change in behavior, that you can no longer create a new track outside a folder when there is an expanded folder, appears to be the reason why this felt unintuitive to me.

For reference, the behavior when adding a new track with the last track inside a folder selected has not changed between Cubase 12 and Cubase 15.

It did work that way in earlier versions of Cubase.

I’m not sure why you think that you know what “the user” doesn’t think. Have you interviewed 2000 users about their preference regarding newly created tracks when the currently selected one is within a folder?

Ha ha, the uno reverse card. I have seen 5 year olds trying to use this tactic.
You made a claim, so you have to prove that you actually know what you are talking about. Not me nor anybody else. So, how do you know what “the user” wants and who is “the user”?

You could just write “I expect” instead. Why do you exaggerate?

They keep messing up things that used to work perfectly and are practical. All the rainbow unicorn bells and whistles and watered down graphics are tolerable it they must, for whoever needs and uses that, but killing good and solid working features and making it more work to deal with is incredibly frustrating. Do an A I search on “alt/click now cuts through all the tracks instead of only the top layer” and see my nightmare. I was shocked when I did a search out of curiosity, to see my very posts and email content on there! Most of the things that come up are my years of trying to get them to “fix” something that originally wasn’t broken, or at least offer preferences for what I have used as a main tool for years! I suppose it’s reassuring to know I’m not the only one that has a problem with it. I’ve nearly exhausted all the recourses including feature requests, Greg Ondo online and even on a Zoom call, Yamaha support by emails and on the phone, etc… This has gone on for literally years and I still have to use the older software in the studio, even though I have the latest versions in the house, trying to get all this stuff worked out before creating computer hell by putting a new system in the main studio.

PS I’ve also “sold” a lot of clients on Cubase or Nuendo, being a loyal user since Nuendo V1. Have been a pro in the business for over 50 years, for what it’s worth.
