Brand new to Dorico. Using free trial of Dorico 6 elements. Making a concert band score, but audition sounds and playback only sound for 4 saxes and euph. Just tried a new template and there are NO sounds, no playback. I continue writing because of a deadline, but can’t playback.
Hi @william.hochkeppel, and welcome to the Forum.
Sorry to hear that you have playback issues.
One first step that would help the Team to see (possibly) what is going on, is to upload here the Dorico Diagnostic zip file that you can generate from menu Help>Create Diagnostic Report.
Which Playback Template are you using? Can you upload the Dorico project file that presents the issue, so we can test it on our system?
There are also videos that give some advices about audio troubleshooting (maybe you find something helpful there, otherwise wait for the Team to reply):
OT: I reckon ‘euphoria’ should be read ‘euphonium’
Sure, it’s an underrated instrument in the concert world, and I fully endorse this subtle hint!
May Autocorrect live a long and prosperous life for the amusement of humanity, while it lasts.
Euphoria is what I’ll feel if only the playback would play all instruments, not just the barifone (sic) and saxes.

Here is the diagnostic report and my draft score in early stages. With a short deadline and as a novice, I purchased a Gr. 3 concert band template from Bradley Hartman. He could not fix the problem and his feedback only got me in deeper. Now I get pop ups about license problems. I continue to work on my score, based on the Hartman template, but with audition and playback not working (except Sx and euph). Today I made a new concert band layout from scratch, and there were NO sounds.

the sound setup in your Project is quite strange/wrong: you have the Default Expression Maps loaded for the majority of tracks (for example flute 1), which uses the velocity for dynamics, while in Halion Sonic it is set to Modulation Wheel (CC1): no wonder if all sounds ppp!
-
Just reapplying the Auto Playback Template reestablishes all correct libraries and Expression Maps. To (re) apply a Playback Template go in menu Play>Playback Template, select for example Auto or the last one on the bottom of the list that has Iconica Sketch in it, then click on Apply and Close.
-
Also: you didn’t add the dynamics in all instruments. The Proofreading functionality is very helpful! You can assign a shortcut to Duplicate to staff Below, and copy so all the dynamics in all staves::
-
If you don’t make use of extreme dynamics (ppp and fff), you can shrink the range of the Dynamic curve to for example -4 and 4, (experiment with different values):
- Here a short rendition using Note Performer Playback Template (and after adding the f and p dynamics!):
Many thanks! I’m so glad to have this fixed. That was an area of Dorico I hadn’t been to, and may never know how it got set incorrectly. It may have something to do with Hartman’s template, which he said began in Finale and transferred over. I hope he isn’t supplying Temps. that give others problems. He was unable to provide the fix.
I do wonder if I’ll have to do those few corrections to all future projects? Is there a way to make the setting permanent?
This solution and the assistance from Dorico and the forum is very encouraging. I also appreciate your tips. I’m learning new things every day and starting to feel confident in under than a week. It’s a great product and support system. I intend to buy the full version and ramp up my writing now that I’m retired after 49 years as a college band director/woodwind Prof. --Bill
Maybe creating a custom project template might be a solution for you ?
To use that as your next starting point?
