No guitar effect sound only dry sound

Hi everyone your help is needed. I cant guitar effects sounds to work. i only get a dry sound. i am a beginner ) but i did try for days but no luck. first i make a audio track and inside a FX track and load guitar rig 7 so far so good but no effects sounds. stand alone it works. i realy hope you can help me. thank you .

For guitar effects (amp sims), the most common way to use them is an insert directly on the audio track. No need for a separate FX track.

Also, you don’t provide any details about your audio interface / Cubase version, etc.

Are you using Direct Monitoring?

Hi Sorry i didnt provide more info. i use cubase the latest version. My soundcard is the RME firefaceUCXII i use this for triggering my edrum with superior drummer 3 in cubase About direct monitoring i dont no how to check that , the software totalmix FX that is needed for routing etc direct monitoring is by default of i read in the manual. In the insert you see the guitarrig and if i play the guitar you see a signal but no sound . all the plugins from cubase have also no sound.

RME Totalmix has 2 operation modes… Full and DAW. If you are not familiar with Totalmix I would suggest working in DAW mode until you start to understand the routings you are trying to use.

Next, create an audio track, use guitar rig as an insert (make sure it is turned on), make sure that audio track is pointed to an output. If you want to listen to the track before or during recording you need to click on the tiny speaker symbol for that track (search the manual for Track Monitoring if you’re not sure where this is).

Let us know if that works.

Hi Thank you for your time and reply. i did try that yesterday but than i i have no headphone output enymore. years ago i did use a verry old cubase and everything was fine . It has to be in the total FX i think . guitarig stand allone is fine. again i wish i could use the daw mode but no headphone output and also than there is no signal in the vst and also all the other plugins.

i am afraid i made a very expensive mistake to buy the RME it is to late to send it back . i did try for weeks day after day to get vsts to run in cubase. nothing works . not in daw mode not in advanced and noboy has a clue also not RME . it is verry stresfull to lose such a lot of money.

Hi, @winterswiek

In all cases, and for troubleshooting purposes, I would disable the direct monitoring in BOTH TotalMix and Cubase. After this your UCX II unit should work with an adapted routing

For the former :

  • In the TotalMix window, use the Options > Preferences window and tick the Disable ASIO Monitoring option.
  • In Cubase, use the Stusio > Studio Setup command. In the Audio System > ASIO Fireface USB pane, untick the Direct Monitoring option.

After this…

… I understand why you are suggesting this, but I would do the opposite. TotalMix DAW mode is rather cryptic : I’ve never been able to use it in a reliable way and, again for troubleshooting, it seems better to me to have all the inputs/outputs clearly visible and functional. Why so ? because it makes all these more easy to set in Cubase Studio > Audio Connections window. Nothing can reliably work in Cubase if all the inputs/outputs busses are not rigorously set with their corresponding hardware equivalent.

@winterswiek

It would help to see screenshots of :

  • your Cubase Studio > Audio Connections > Inputs and Outputs panes.
  • An extended view of your Studio > Studio Setup > Audio System > ASIO Fireface USB panel (I have an UCX used as an USB unit - I guess that it’s the same on your end).

it will be time to look more closely at the way you have set Guitar Rig relatively to your audio track after (basically, you should put it as an insert - having the Pro version, I usually put everything guitar related as inserts in the Input Channels, as I record directly the processed sounds, but that’s just me…).

Beside this, which version of Cubase (Pro, Artist, Elements…) ? I ask this, thinking of the Control room and eventual input channels availability, in your case…

FWIW, I agree completely here. When I got my UFXIII, TotalMix was a bit of a learning curve for me, but once time is taken to really familiarize oneself with it, the options are amazing.

I’m almost sure that it has been so for every TotalMix users…

Hi everyone. now i have effect working, but.. only on the monitors nog on headphone thats a dry mix i unchecked the speaker ?monitor item but no luck also it records ony the dry sounds ..i dissabeled direct monitoring and selecht the richt output channel in total FX wich is a bit confusing. but now how i can get the vst sound in the headphone en also recording that sound in cubase . i know it is hard to answer from a distance so far thank you guys for all the help

Hi . have also the pro version and put it as a insert but only monitors i here the vst. on headphone only the dry sound .

i have to figure out how to put the screenshots here

i think i got it to work but maybe still my settings are wrong so i uploades some screenshots here thank you again for the amazing help here

All this seems ok, AFAICS, excepting what’s in the screenshot 3 (Cubase Audio Connections > Inputs panel) : either get rid of the Mono In 2 bus, which collides with the default Stereo in, or get rid of the latter and define two mono busses for the first inputs. Not a big deal, as you are using the Mono In 3 for your guitar channel, but still… for a reason, I always cringe when seeing a hardware input defined in two different busses.

Beside this, I hope that your whole setup is working reliably now. Let us know…

Hello there, thank you for your input. I have audio woop woop . i am a novice in this world but i get it slowly. The software what you need to get sound and routing from RME is hell it is hard to get your head around. i wil check your advices. I dont now why i use mono in 3 it is becouse only that i have sound. Is there a better way. Guitar rig puts stereo out wich its strange i gues it mixed up? let me know please ) again i cant thank you enough and all the other guys who taking the time to help. this a very friendly forum. RME forum is very toxic . greetzzzz

Sorry for the late answer… :face_without_mouth:

With the UCX/UCX II, no problem, as long as you are using the Inst switch in the corresponding Totalmix channel for your guitar. This said, you should also get a decent sound from any UCX input which have this switch, if you are using a guitar as direct input.

If Guitar Rig is providing stereo effects, it’s normal. When using a guitar with a direct input, I often use a stereo audio track for it which allows the giving back of the Steinberg VST Amp Rack (often unfairly overlooked, IMO…) stereo presets/settings.
