I thought I’d try here, on the slim chance that somebody else has had this problem. I want to record synth directly from a Vox Cambridge 50 Amp directly into the Cubase 14 (Mac) over the USB connection. I select the Vox driver, assign the correct inputs to the audio track, but all I get when I record are short bursts of static. I’ve set the project to sample rate 44 kHz (like the amp). I’ve tried it with the Vox Tone Room amp and direct from the amp, it’s always the same. I’d really like to record the synth with the amp settings, but it’s frustrating that something apparently so simple doesn’t work. Any ideas would be helpful, thanks!

As a first troubleshooting move, I would try to use the analog line output of your amp instead, as it seems that there is one.
Concerning the USB connection, could you give more details about your setup (especially the OS, your audio interface and Cubase version) and the Vox driver ? How does this driver appear in your Studio > Studio Setup > Audio System panel of Cubase ? Looking at the user manual, it seems that this driver is to be used mainly with iOS based devices. The statements about the eventual use of either OSx or Windows aren’t very clear…
A screenshot of this panel would help with the Vox driver selected, if possible. Additionaly, another one showing the audio track you are using with the Routing section of its inspector unfolded would also be welcome.
I think I found the basic problem, but no solution. There should be an input from the Vox available in Cubase called “VOX 2ch Audio dev.”, but there’s only one there named “VOX 2ch Audio dev. Line OUT”. According to google, that’s the wrong one and one must create an aggregate input in Audio MIDI Setup. I’ve tried that now, with the exact same results. At the start of a musical phrase there’s a jump in the audio input levels, but then it fades away…the sound is just a burst of static. It resembles problems I’0ve had with sample rate mismatch, but VOX and Cubase project are set to 44 kHz. The only audio out jack on the Vox Cambridge is a small headphone jack. Anyway, I’m on a Mac Studio Sequoia 15.7, Cubase 14. I’ve attached the screen shots. Thanks for your input!

Thanks for asking, I’m always recording lots of things into Cubase on the Mac Studio with no problems. Only this Vox Cambridge amp has been a problem. So, I got the new USB cable I ordered, and I could make this comparison test: I first tried recording directly into Cubase from the Cambridge 50 amp on my Macbook pro laptop, and it worked immediately, I got a clean signal, no problem. Then I plugged the Vox directly into the Mac Studio, using exactly the same settings (choosing VOX 2ch Audio dev. Line OUT as my input) on my Mac Studio I get no signal at all. As I mentioned previously, both the Cubase project and the amplifier are 44 kHz, 24 bit depth.
When I look at the “VOX 2ch Audio dev. Line OUT» in the Audio MIDI setup, the input slide controls are greyed out, ie. I cannot turn them up. AI tells me that is the reason I’m not getting a signal into the Mac Studio, but I’ve tried every suggestion, and nothing works. There must be a simple explanation, but I’m not finding it.
The reason I ask is that mic privacy settings can block audio input but that would block other things from recording so if you can record with other devices that’s probably not it…but always worth double checking it didn’t get enabled.
Greyed out input gain may be as intended…did you confirm if they are greyed out in the working MacBook??
That’s a very good question. And indeed, the audio input sliders are also greyed out in the MacBook, even though I get a clean input signal there. So now I’m really baffled.
