No Metronome sound!

My first time here, I have just upgraded from Cubase 10.5 artist to Pro 15. Everything seems to be working normally but I can’t for the life of me figure out why I don’t hear my metronome. Its activated, all settings are correct (click is active, output selected, tried default and other metronome sounds, mapping of the individual clicks is correct). I have also tried going to control room and enabling click here, volume is up. I made a dedicated click track by adding a metronome track and rendering click audio between locators. Just at a complete loss here, any help would be greatly appreciated

Welcome, @a.miesel

Your issue is a ‘classic’ one…
Several things to check again, especially in the Metronome Setup window :

  1. be sure that ‘Stereo out’ is selected for the Audio Click Outputs in the Click destinations section.
  2. Still in this section, and for a troubleshooting purpose, I strongly suggest to use Audio Sounds and choose, in the next Click Sounds panel, a relevent sound. There will still be time, later, to set eventual MIDI sources…
  3. Be sure that the relevent option is chosen in the Click Options section.

Beside this, what destination are you using in the Control Room ? I ask this, because the Preferences > VST > Control Room > Use Phones Channel as Preview Channel intervenes, when using the Phones Channel in the activated CR. Addtitionaly, you don’t have to enable the click in the Control room : I’m still wondering how this one actually works, because it is not functional, on my end - I also must be misssing something…

Hey Cubic thanks so much for your response! Unfortunately I already tried everything you highlighted in the Metronome Setup window, including using default cubase click sound and some of the other options such as clave and tambo. No dice. Stereo out is selected here as well, and I am getting sound from my monitors and headphones from the tracks. No MIDI sources to speak of. I looked into the Preferences>VST>Control Room and Use Phones Channel as Preview Channel is unticked. tried turning it on and off but doesn’t seem to make a difference. I was previously using Cubase 10.5 Artist for the past 10 years or so with no issues like this ever occurring. Today I started having all kinds of issues with the Artist version so I decided it was time to upgrade. All the issues I was having earlier in the day (sounds playing out of time, no playback unless loop was highlighted in the locators, if I moved the locators off the tracks they would play where no tracks were present, and of course no click sound) were fixed. My sample rate and buffer size are all correct between my 18i20 and Cubase, I’ve never used an external clock or anything like that (very basic setup). I am pretty confident in my trouble shooting skills but this is stumping me.

Thanks again though

In control room there are individual settings for different outputs. These have to be activated on whichever output you want the click on. So separately you have the monitors and headphones. Each have an activation button in control room and a volume control. If you create a speaker B this also has its own activation and volume as does any cues you create. So you should have the main click activated and the specific output in control room (make sure you have the right hand pain open and the control room tab selected. I’m not talking about connections control room settings) activated. They all have individual activation buttons and volumes on the control room tab in the right hand pane.

In the Metronome Setup Click Sounds tab, what happens when you Audition Click Sounds using the Start button?

When you press “C” on the keyboard, does it toggle the metronome icon in the project window?

For your Audio Connections, are you using Outputs–or Control Room? In most cases, you’ll use just one of them.

If you’re going to use the Control Room, your Stereo Out in Outputs should be Not Connected. The Control Room tab in Audio Connections is where the outputs are configured.

Scrap that… :face_with_hand_over_mouth: each CR channel (whether phones, main or cues), as defined in the Audio Connections > Control Room panel, has its own set of controls, including the Activate Metronome Click one, as @mkok rightly said. So, if you are using the CR, it should be activated at least in the channel you are using, as well as as the one in the project window. I almost never use the metronome, so I forgot this rather important detail…

Beside this, and as @XLColdJ also rightly stated, if you are using the CR, be sure that the Stereo Out bus in the Audio Connections > Outputs panel should is set as Not connected. This usually prevent any eventual routing issue.

Ok yesterday when I was working on this I didn’t try actually recording anything new, I just used some of the Midi instruments that came with Cubase to test if the sound worked at all. Today I tried importing an Audio track from another session. No sound on the imported track. I tried to record a new track and I am getting and error message pop up saying “Recording Error. Too many tracks recording” even though it is only 1 track being recorded. After looking up what the issue could be it seems I need to try a different hard drive or update the gpu drivers. I tried both of these fixes to no avail.

I’m going to take this home and try installing on a different PC. My studio PC is pretty old and I’m thinking this could be a PC error, not a Cubase problem

Yup sure enough I installed on my home pc and everything works right out of the gate. tracks play, metronome plays. Looks like I need to mess with the studio PC. Sorry and thank you guys for all the help!
